Infrastructure Ontario picks Colliers for project management
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) has selected Colliers Project Leaders as the next Project Management Services Provider (PMSP) for the Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure’s General Real Estate Portfolio (GREP).
IO’s PMSP program involves managing a variety of capital repair and ministry-funded projects across the province’s real estate portfolio with a value of up to $20 million. The contract includes program management, project delivery, corporate support, and provision of technical services.

Province says moving Ontario Science Centre would save $257M
The Government Ontario and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) released the business case for moving the Ontario Science Centre from its current location at Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue, to Ontario Place.
With the partnership and participation of other government ministries, the Ontario Science Centre’s leadership and various third-party experts, the business case was prepared to help assess and identify the costs and options for relocating the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place.

Cheyanne Hammell Receives 2023 Premier’s Award for Technology
PCL Constructors Canada Inc. is pleased to announce that Cheyanne Hammell, PCL Toronto’s Special Projects manager, Mohawk College Alumnus and trailblazer for women in construction, has been awarded the 2023 Premier’s Award for Technology.
Presented at the Colleges Ontario Higher Education Summit in Toronto, the Premier’s Awards recognize recent and past college graduates from seven categories who have made outstanding social and economic contributions to their local communities, the province and beyond and who have made important contributions to Ontario’s postsecondary system.

Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York receives zero carbon building certification
KingSett Capital and Fairmont Royal York announced that the landmark hotel in Toronto has received the Canada Green Building Council’s (CAGBC’s) Zero Carbon Building – Performance Standard certification. This $65 million project was completed after close to five years of detailed planning and execution. It will reduce over 7,000 tonnes of carbon annually or 80 per cent of the hotel’s annual carbon emissions, the equivalent of taking 1,558 cars off the road. This decarbonization project represents the largest heritage hotel retrofit of its kind within the Fairmont global brand portfolio and offers a definitive roadmap for creating sustainable energy sources for similar properties.

Ontario to do away with mandatory coroner's inquests on construction site deaths
Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey says the province intends to do away with mandatory coroner’s inquests for workers who died on constructions sites. In its place, the province will conduct an annual review of construction site deaths in an effort to alleviate pressure on overloaded coroners.
The changes are part of a new omnibus bill the province is set to table today.
Downey says the government is also proposing legislation that would make it easier for victims of crimes to sue their offenders.

Birchley Park development a brownfield gem in Toronto’s ‘Quarry Lands’
After sitting vacant and underutilized for approximately 70 years, a large property right in the centre of east-end Toronto is on the cusp of being transformed into an infill residential neighbourhood with a mix of condominiums, townhouses, affordable and market rentals, and affordable home ownership units.
Birchley Park will be comprised of two condominiums, 12 and nine storeys respectively, a Habitat for Humanity block of 58 affordable townhouses, and a 124-unit City of Toronto rental building, of which 64 units are to be affordable, significant parkland, and possibly a school.

Construction sector adds workers in September
There were an additional 22,100 employees in Canada’s workforce in September, including 1,900 in the construction sector, according to Statistics Canada’s latest Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours. The increase followed a decline of 16,500 in August, and a month with little change in July. Meanwhile, job vacancies declined by 40,700, or roughly six per cent, in September, coming in at to 632,200 as the steady downward trend from the peak of just over 1 million reached in May 2022 continued.

STO poised for major advances in 2024: Young
There are major expectations for Skilled Trades Ontario to deliver the construction workforce Ontario needs after the lost years of the Ontario College of Trades.
And as the crown agency prepares to head into its third year, when it will finally get ahold of all of the administrative tools that STO CEO and registrar Melissa Young says it needs to succeed, Young believes STO is poised to deliver.
