Fall economic statement falls short: CCA, FCM, ACEC


The federal government’s fall economic statement “fell short” in important areas including measures to shore up Canada’s trade-enabling infrastructure, according to a statement from the Canadian Construction Association. The federal government released the fall economic statement this week, promising to deliver 101,000 new homes by 2032.


Starting in the next fiscal year, Ottawa will open a $15 billion loan funding under the Apartment Construction Loan Program — to spur the construction of affordable homes.

Fall-from-height injuries fell 19 per cent after WAH training made mandatory in Ontario


An Institute for Work & Health (IWH) study has found worker injuries due to falls from heights declined after working at heights (WAH) training was made mandatory and standardized in the province of Ontario and construction workers maintained safer practices two years after training.


The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, found in the three-year period since Ontario made the training mandatory, the rate of fall-from-height injuries leading to time off work fell by 19 per cent.

PCL Constructors awarded second phase of Rogers Centre renovation project


Work is well underway on the multi-year Rogers Centre renovation following Rogers Stadium Limited Partnership awarding the second phase of the project to PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto).


The second phase of work is part of a more than $300 million multi-year renovation that aims to transform the 34-year-old multi-purpose stadium into a ballpark through a series of projects focused on modernizing the fan experience and building world-class player facilities for Canada’s baseball team.

EllisDon lands Toronto Warden Station redevelopment job


EllisDon has announced it has been selected to lead the Warden Station redevelopment project in Toronto for the TTC. The redevelopment will introduce a transit hub, CreateTO mixed-income housing and new public spaces around Taylor Massey Creek, stated a release.


Warden Station, a central transfer point on Line 2, has been part of Toronto’s transit network since the 1960s. The redevelopment will make the station fully accessible and upgrade passenger access, said the constructor.

Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York gets CAGBC certified after $65M retrofit


Toronto’s iconic Fairmont Royal York hotel has achieved the Canada Green Building Council’s (CAGBC’s) Zero Carbon Building (ZCB)-Performance Standard certification after a $65 million retrofit project led by KingSett Capital. Completed after nearly five years of meticulous planning, the initiative is set to annually reduce more than 7,716 tons (7,000 tonnes) of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to removing 1,558 cars from the road or 80 per cent of the hotel’s annual carbon output.

Ledcor to twin Highway 3


The first phase of twinning for Alberta’s Highway 3, between the town of Taber and the hamlet of Burdett, is set to start in the spring. The contract for the 46-kilometre project was recently awarded to Ledcor Highways Ltd.


Pre-construction work, including acquiring the right of way and relocating utilities, is underway and will be completed this year. Construction will begin in spring 2024, with completion anticipated in 2025. The project is expected to support 755 jobs.

Construction investment strong in September amid quarterly declines


A 0.2 per cent dip in the commercial segment was the only slip to be found as investment in building construction increased 5.3 per cent across Canada in September. The $18.9 billion posted resulted from a 7.3 per cent jump in residential spending, which came in at $12.9 billion, and a 1.2 per cent increase in the non-residential sector, which reached $6.0 billion.


Growth in residential investment was driven by Ontario, which rose almost seven per cent, Quebec’s rise of more than nine per cent, Alberta’s 10.6 bump, and a whopping 34 per cent spike in Manitoba.
