T-SPLOST ISSUE MAY RESURFACE IN TIFT
COUNTY MANAGER TELLS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Tift County may eventually be faced with a referendum on
T-SPLOST -- a Transportation Special Purpose Local Sales Tax -- for
road improvements, County Manager
Jim Carter told
Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce members
Thursday.

Carter cited statistics from the Ga. Department of Transportation about the traffic count at the
intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Interstate 75's Exit 62 across from the Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Tifton.
Nearly 8.2 million vehicles annually pass through there, and the daily traffic count is approximately 22,500 vehicles, Carter said.
"The busiest intersection south of Macon is right here," he added.
In the last regular, non-transportation local SPLOST, Carter said $23 million, or 40 percent of it, has gone toward road work in Tift County.
In 2012, local voters had defeated a T-SPLOST referendum that required approval from a majority of other counties within an 18-county region. Since then, the General Assembly

has revised the T-SPLOST to allow a single county, or a small group of counties to join and seek a T-SPLOST referendum on their own for transportation projects.
If a T-SPLOST is sought locally, Carter told Chamber members that their support will be necessary.
Also during the Chamber membership meeting, new Tifton City Manager Pete Pyrzenski introduced himself and said he wants to ensure that the city is attractive and open to economic development.

NO 'BENEFIT TO CITY'
IF CITY & COUNTY FIRE DEPTS MERGE, CITY MANAGER SAYS
A Tift County proposal to merge the Tifton city and county fire departments, seven months after the county broke away from the joint department, "would not be in the best interest of the city residents," City Manager Pete Pyrzenski told City Council on Thursday night.
Since the county terminated the joint fire agreement effective last July 1 and created its own fire department, the city's "ISO" insurance rating has improved from a 4 to a 3, which means "significant savings to city residents in their insurance premiums," Pyrzenski said.
He said recombining the departments would likely result in a higher ISO rating resulting in higher insurance premiums for the city.
Also, "based on what the county is proposing, the City of Tifton Fire Department would be eliminated and operational control of fire suppression and protection would be turned over to the county," Pyrzenski said.
He noted the city fire department has been operating well with professional personnel and all necessary equipment for more than a century, while the county department is less than a year old.
"We do not believe joining the departments has any benefit to the city residents," the city manager said, noting that there are areas where the city and county can work together. Suggestions include an automatic aid agreement, sharing the Westside Fire Station, leasing to the county the Southside Fire Station, a use agreement to allow county firefighters to use city fire training facilities and conducting joint training exercises.
City Council was meeting in a workshop and took no action on the city manager's report.
