Ember Stomp invites residents to learn how we can all prepare for wildfire. This FREE event is fun for the whole family. A “Kids Zone” will feature a magician, face painting, sing-a-longs, and interactive games. The event includes wildfire products and service providers, fire smart landscaping exhibits, and live burn demos. Live music, food trucks, art and firefighting goats and sheep guarantee a good time.

The focus of this year is experiential learning that makes the ideas of home hardening, fire smart landscaping, and preparing for evacuation come alive.

Owls - Nature's Best Pest Control

Project by Lauren Somerville Richardson Bay Girl Scout

Owls like the Great Horned, Barn, and Western Screech Owls do more than provide beautiful nightly calls—they're nature’s best pest controllers! A single Barn Owl can eliminate over 1,400 rodents a year, offering a natural solution without toxic chemicals. Anticoagulant rat poisons, commonly used for rodent control, can cause slow, painful deaths for wildlife, pets, and other unintended victims. By avoiding these poisons and installing owl nesting boxes, you help protect local wildlife and support owl conservation.

Lauren Somerville, a Marin Catholic High School Senior and Richardson Bay Girl Scout, is raising awareness about the dangers of rat poisons and promoting owls as a natural alternative for her Girl Scout Gold Award. She has partnered with Raptors Are The Solution and All About Owls and has provided owl boxes to Marin Catholic High School, Strawberry Point Elementary School, and Richardson Bay Audubon Society.

Walk and Roll Wednesdays

First Wednesday Every Month (schools may vary)

Establishing a designated Walk/Roll Day at your school keeps the momentum going after International Walk and Roll to School Day. Students and families have a designated day each week, such as Walk/Roll Wednesdays.

This is a great way to ingrain walking/bicycling into your school culture. Fun themes help make the enthusiasm for walking and rolling a year-long treat. It can also be a catalyst to encourage weekly walk and roll days, walking school buses, and bike trains.

For additional information on how to travel to school safely and sustainably check out Marin Commutes

Marin Sustainability Tracker

Are you familiar with the Marin Sustainability Tracker? This tool from the Marin Climate and Energy Partnership (MCEP) is an interactive map that shows how each jurisdiction is doing in terms of sustainable development. It covers categories such as energy, transportation, green house gas emissions, waste, and water.

Check out the tracker here

Sustainability Tip of the Month

Don't forget: our birds and wildlife need water too!

Summer's over but the heat is still on! Months with little or no rain leave our birds and wildlife thirsty. You can make a huge difference by simply placing a birdbath in your yard or garden and keeping it clean and filled with fresh water. Keep a mason jar or water receptacle by your sink and save water you might usually drain and and instead fill your birdbath. Here are some more tips for making your home bird and wildlife friendly

With any luck your efforts will be rewarded with birdsong and evening birdbath play! You will be a resting spot for our local feathered friends as well as a refuge for migrating birds.
