 You heard it here first - beetroot is the new super food! Sally Gunnell told us at the launch of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards last month and now the story is everywhere. Apparently the unusually high nitrate level in beetroot helps reduce blood pressure and whilst it is almost fat free, it is rich in magnesium, iron and folic acid. |

Sussex High Sheriffs' verdict on local food & drink
Refreshing, heart warming, tangy, lively, robust and - in one case - squidgy was the verdict of Sussex High Sheriffs about Sussex food and drink at an event bringing together the finalists in the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2012/13, held at the newly re-furbished Norfolk Pavilion at Ardingly Showground.
High Sheriff of East Sussex David Allam and High Sheriff of West Sussex, Andrewjohn Stephenson Clarke from the Borde Hill Estate, joined Paula Seager and Sandra Murphy, who run the awards,and 120 leading lights in the local food industry, including most of the finalists in this year's awards.
The High Sheriffs sampled some of the superb produce available in the county, including sparkling wine, sausages, cheese, apple juice, pies and brownies.They were given the opportunity to provide just one word to describe each product's taste and thereby characterise the produce of the county of Sussex as a whole.
Public voting for our 75 finalists in this year's awards is already under way and well up on last year, not just because we have improved our online voting system and introduced text voting for the first time, but because the growing trend is to buy local.
The awards are all about boosting the market for Sussex produce and letting people in the county know about the fantastic food and drink grown and made in the county, as well as the great restaurants, pubs, cafes and food shops where it can be bought and enjoyed. Everyone has a strong opinion when it comes to food and drink and we urge people to try out the produce on our finalists list and vote for their favourites at www. sussexfoodawards.biz now - there are some real hidden treasures to be found!

Brighton & Hove Restaurant Charity Challenge
Restaurants in the Brighton & Hove area are being urged to sign up to support Chestnut Tree House, the only children's hospice in Sussex, by taking part in Chestnut's Restaurant Challenge, as part of the Brighton Food Festival in September.
An optional �1 is added to all bills in participating restaurants during September, with the proceeds donated to the hospice at the end of the month. The challenge was thought up by Minesh Agnihotri, owner of Indian Summer in East Street, Brighton. Explains Minesh: 'I wanted to get involved with a local charity and Chestnut Tree House is an extremely worthy cause, offering a vital service to local children and their families. I have a captive audience in my restaurant so it made sense to help raise awareness of this fantastic charity amongst my customers.
Said Chestnut Tree House's Community Fundraiser, Juliette Macpherson: "We were thrilled that so many of Brighton's top restaurants signed up to Chestnut's Restaurant Challenge 2011. Eating out is always a real treat but diners had the added satisfaction of knowing that, as well as enjoying a delicious meal, they were also helping to support local children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions."

Tasty canap�s and exciting TV news in Brighton
Sumptuous canap�s from Ren's Kitchen and Real Patisserie, washed down with gallons of wine, were served to over 100 local business leaders at the Latest Music Bar last week at a special event introducing Brighton's new terrestrial TV channel.
"The good news is that it's not a dream - Brighton will have its own TV channel!" said Bill Smith, managing director of the Latest Group of companies, as part of a presentation which included some of the city's top creative talent.
Said Angi Mariani, business development director of the Latest Group: "Our content will include local news, sport, the arts, culture, politics, homes and people - and we will also be working with top local companies, such as Baby Cow, BTV and others to develop new programmes which we can broadcast locally and sell nationally and internationally."
Latest TV has led the successful bid for a city tv license, gathering unanimous cross-party support from local MPs, the city council, Juice FM, Wired Sussex and the business community and Brighton and Hove is now on the shortlist amongst 20 much larger cities in the UK, including London, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham.

 The Glynde Food & English Wine Festival is this weekend!
The much loved Glynde Food & English Wine Festival is this weekend (14th and 15th) and it's looking more scrumptious than ever, with an array of delicious food, fun things to see and do and the opportunity to experience an array of local wines from the South East Vineyards Association (SEVA), with support from Knill James.
Make sure you sample a good range of our wonderful Sussex wine - supporting local is so important and it's a great opportunity to discover more about why English Wine is special.
For serious wine lovers, there are also some great tutored tasting opportunities with Master of Wine Stephen Skelton and Ewan Lacey from Channel 4's The Cookery School.
The Glynde Food and English Wine Festival draws visitors from far and wide and provides a fantastic showcase for SEVA members to present their wares to the increasing number of people who acknowledge the quality of English wine.

Don't miss the Olympic Torch Picnic in Hove Park!
Pack up a picnic supper and set up camp at Hove Park to enjoy the Olympic Torch celebrations on Monday 16th July.
Same Sky, known for their creative events, including the Burning of the Clocks, will be putting on an exciting display from 4pm and there will be lots to see and enjoy over supper, right up until the flame is due to arrive at 6pm.
