THE 150th COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE OF MOBILE BAY AND
SIEGE OF FORT GAINES

The well-preserved ramparts of Fort Gaines have guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay for more than 150 years. Fort Gaines helped to keep Union forces at Bay during the Civil War until August of 1864. The historic site stands at the eastern tip of Dauphin Island where it commands panoramic views of the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Fort Gaines was recently designated as one of the most endangered historic sites in America. The event highlights Fort Gaines integral role in the Battle of Mobile Bay.

This August 2-3 commemoration will be a two day event telling the story of this historic battle. Come and surround yourself with history as we depict the attack by the Union Navy upon the fort as they attempt to steam past the fort and into the bay. Be witnesses to the opening of the siege guns upon the fort. Union artillery and infantry will seal the fate of the Confederate garrison by occupying the siege lines as they commence the bombardment of Fort Gaines. Saturday evening, we ask that you turn your eyes to the sky over the bay at Fort Morgan, as you delight over fireworks. Sunday, the guns open fire again upon the fort and continue throughout the day until the fort finally surrenders to Union forces.
DAUPHIN ISLAND PARK & BEACH BOARD CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF SERVICE

In 1954, the Dauphin Island Trust Indenture allowed the first bridge to be built to the mainland. The Dauphin Island Park & Beach Board was then established so that the general public that did not own property on the Island could have access to the Island's natural resources. The Park & Beach Board is and has been a non-profit organization. The Park & Beach Board has around 265 acres of parkland, and in that we have 10 park facilities.

"Dauphin Island has been blessed to have some of the most pristine natural resources in the State of Alabama. Our parklands are an extension of who we are and our quality of life here in coastal Alabama," said Matthew Capps, Dauphin Island Park & Beach Boards Executive Director.

Throughout the year, the Dauphin Island Park & Beach will host a variety of camping specials, nature, and cultural based events in honor of 60 years of service.
