Oakland Public Education Fund

Oakland Athletic League Needs Community Support to Reach More Students

The Oakland Athletic League needs fundraising help from the community for three things:

  1. Transportation costs, which have become a significant barrier to participation,
  2. Increasing staffing support for OAL programs, and
  3. Growing the OAL internship program.
  4. OAL is ready to do more and needs to bring on more adults and youth talent to achieve our goals.

For the first time, thanks to an investment by the Oakland Ed Fund and another funder, OAL is starting an inaugural internship program for high school students to gain real-time experience in sports programming and business operations.

After piloting the internship program, OAL plans to grow it and bring on more students. SUPPORT OAKLAND STUDENT ATHLETICS

Lamorinda CERT

CERT Water Drum Sale

Being prepared for disasters is essential for the safety of you and your family, and having an emergency water supply is a fundamental step in being prepared.

What would you do if an earthquake disabled our EBMUD water supply for days or even weeks? Experts estimate the minimum water each person needs per day is 2 gallons; one for drinking and another for sanitation. If you don’t have an emergency water supply on hand, you might be forced to stand in line for water once water trucks could even get set up. At 8 pounds per gallon, water is also very heavy to carry.

Fortunately, the Lamorinda CERT Foundation water drum sale is now in progress.

Lamorinda CERT sells water storage drums to residents so they can proactively get an emergency water supply in place at their homes. The drums are offered in various sizes as well as other emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, GMRS and HAM hand held radios, and utility shutoff tools. The sale is on now through noon May 2nd. Pickup for drums ordered will be held on the evening of Friday, May 10 and the morning of Saturday, May 11 behind Fire Station 41 at 1284 Moraga Way in Moraga. All residents are encouraged to have an emergency supply of drinking water in case our community water supply is disrupted by a major event (earthquake). To purchase water drums, fire extinguishers, radios or shut off tools go to the Lamorinda CERT website: https://supplies.lamorindacert.org.

She has been in our rescue, Northern California Sled Dog Rescue (NorSled), for about 16 months and is patiently waiting for a foster or forever home. She is a gorgeous, dark eyed beauty. She walks well on a leash, is crate trained and knows basic commands. She loves playing with toys and people, but is not very interested in other dogs.

Artisan Walk
Sweet Thursdays

May Sweet Thursday Author Series

Ethan Fawcett gets a letter from a bike touring company, asking him to not sign up for another trip. So begins “The Boys,” Katie Hafner’s taut and utterly delightful debut novel. When introverted Ethan Fawcett marries Barb, he has every reason to believe he will be delivered from a lifetime of solitude. One day Barb brings home two brothers, Tommy and Sam, for them to foster, and when the pandemic hits, Ethan becomes obsessed with providing a perfect life for the boys. Instead of bringing Barb and Ethan closer together, though, the boys become a wedge in their relationship, as Ethan is unable to share with Barb a secret that has been haunting him since childhood. When Ethan takes Tommy and Sam on a biking trip in Italy, and it becomes clear just how unusual Ethan and his children are – what it will take for Ethan to repair his marriage. It is a character study, social commentary on pandemic isolation, and an incredible journey back to center.

Help us Expand our Class Offerings!

The next chapter of Cooking with Kids, which involves serving the mission of this nonprofit and really beginning to expand our classes to communities of lower income families who both have less access to fun after-school activities and can, science tells us, benefit perhaps more than anyone from learning to love healthy food.

We are ready to launch! A recent partnership agreement with Loaves & Fishes has given us access to a professional kitchen. Additionally, this nonprofit, which serves meals to low-income and food-insecure families, will help us find our first cohort of deserving children.

Our first pilot will launch in the spring of 2024. During the weeks, they will learn to plan a meal. Together, we will plan and design a shopping list. Then, they will learn the skills to prepare a number of meals with and for their families. They will also get to bring home, thanks to Loaves and Fishes, a box of groceries to practice skills at home following each class.

So, just as a chef collects ingredients ahead of time, now it's time to collect the resources I will need to take 8 children through this 5-week cooking course.

•  Obviously, we will need money to fund this program. If you are already convinced you want to give, here's the link: https://www.cwkf.org/donations

•  I am also looking to build community! If you want to hear more or have ideas for me, PLEASE reach out. I am so excited about this program, the chance to talk about it with you would be amazing. cheflyndak@aol.com

•   If you have ANY questions about what I am up to, I would love to answer them - or find answers if I don't know right away. (I am in full learning mode as I launch this new endeavor!)

The initial cost to establish this program is $10,685. That includes the one time cost of furnishing tools needed in the kitchen, training the instructor and their aide and the cost of the first 5 week session.

Lafayette Historical Society
Acalanes Fellowship

Greetings from Acalanes Fellowship Lodge #480, Free & Accepted Masons of California!

Freemasonry is the world’s first and largest fraternal organization. It is guided by the enduring belief that each man has a responsibility to make the world a better place. For more than three hundred years, Masonry has enhanced and strengthened the character of individual men by providing opportunities for fellowship, charity, and the search for truth – within ourselves and the larger world.

For more than a century, our little lodge has served our East Bay communities through philanthropy, community engagement, and spreading the Light of Masonry, making good men better.

Over the years, Acalanes Fellowship has rightly earned the moniker “The Friendly Lodge,” welcoming visitors from all levels of society. We welcome members regardless of race, creed, political persuasion, or family composition, because inclusiveness and connection are what Masonry is all about — meeting on the level to make the world a better place for all humanity.

Our members come from Lafayette and the surrounding area, including Moraga, Orinda, Walnut Creek, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Alamo, Danville, San Ramon, Dublin, and surrounding East Bay cities.

We invite you to visit us in person to learn more about Freemasonry and our lodge. We meet the first Tuesday of each month in the evenings and invite interested men to join us starting at 5:30 for a reception, tour, and dinner, and an opportunity to meet some of the remarkable men that compose our lodge.

For more information, please visit our website at http://acalanesfellowshiplodge.com/

Sincerely,

Michael Roberts, Past Master, Acalanes Fellowship Lodge Number 480, F&AM
