Hillel Ottawa strives to ensure safe environment for Jewish students


"Since Oct. 7, Hillel's focus has been on ensuring that our students are able to use Hillel as a safe space. We have seen an enormous rise in antisemitism both on and off campus, highlighting the fact that our students are being targeted by hate,” explains Oren Baray, Student life and Advocacy Coordinator.

Facebook group Jewish Ottawa Helps updates its focus to aid members


Jewish Ottawa Helps, a Facebook group with 2,400 members, has become the largest virtual space for the Jewish Ottawa community to connect with each other and to offer and ask for support. To adapt to the current climate, we have expanded the scope of Jewish Ottawa Helps to include broader discussions.

Christian ministers lend support, issue letter against antisemitism



In Ottawa, a group of Christian ministers recognized the problem of rising antisemitism and sought to help. Reverend Andrew Love of Dominion-Chalmers United Church and the leadership of One Way Ministries, Mark Peterkins and Richard Long, have drafted “The Ottawa Letter of Concern,” proclaiming their support for the Jewish community.

Since Oct. 7, Federation has sought extra ways to support Israel, community


Built into the mission of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa is dedication to stand with the people of Israel. Since Oct. 7, Federation has been challenged to ensure that the community has safe spaces and opportunities to process emotions, and to gather. As was seen on Instagram, the Federation has documented our support through numerous events and actions.

Reporting antisemitism is more important than ever


"For our authorities to fight hate, they need to hear about it. Every report of hate is real advocacy, and a critical part of this fight. It raises awareness and illustrates how we are impacted by each and every incident," explains David Sachs, Advocacy and Antisemitism Specialist.

Federation's 90th anniversary: Shaped by community by Ron Prehogen


The summer after graduating from high school, I went on an overseas trip with some friends. Our choices were an ashram in India or a kibbutz in Israel. A coin flip resulted in us going to work on a kibbutz in Israel. Little did I know that that experience would forever shape the direction of my life.
