Regional Air Services Impact our Economy

Southern Idaho's regional air travel is serviced by Delta/SkyWest with daily flights from Twin Falls to Salt Lake City. For 2022 SkyWest negotiated with Twin Falls City and County a revenue guarantee of $400,000 over four quarters. To date the guarantee has only been needed in Q1 for $25,000, an indication that flights are utilized and seats are filled.

For 2023 SkyWest requested a new Transportation Services Agreement to guarantee double that of last year at $200,000 per quarter, and to be renewed quarterly, instead of annually. This increase reflects SkyWest's uncertainty for air service markets due to pilot shortages, and is happening in all markets with 50-seat aircraft. The Twin Falls market has performed strong compared to its peer group.

At the City Council meeting on December 5, 2022, Volaire Aviation consultant Michael Mooney presented to the City and County officials the problems about the issues (see meeting video). Mooney believes 2024 will bring more options with smaller planes and more pilots, but for now air service is competitive and agreeing to guaranteed revenue is the best way to retain our services. The Twin Falls County Board of Commissioners were in attendance for this presentation. Airport Manager Bill Carberry asked the City and County to approve the agreement to sustain economic growth, infrastructure, and opportunities for our community.

Preserving air service is critical to our region's economy.
This is a system-wide issue for all 50-seat aircrafts because of pilot shortages.
This new agreement buys time while negotiations continue.
Representatives are exploring long-term solutions and other opportunities are being explored.
Agreeing to this does not increase taxes as the airport has reserve funds from federal money through CARES and ARPA.

The Twin Falls City Council voted 7-0 in favor of signing the SkyWest agreement contingent on approval by the County. The Twin Falls County Commissioners requested more time to get feedback from the community before they make their decision. Please let Twin Falls County Commissioners know you are in support of continuing to guarantee air services!
