Message from the Vice Provost

Some of you may be aware that Nevada now requires state agencies to more accurately report sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression to the Legislative Counsel Bureau. NRS 239B.022 establishes that no individual should be required to provide this information, but if they do, the information is to remain confidential and can only be used “for carrying out the duties of the governmental agency, demographic analysis, coordination of care and services, improvement of care and services, conducting research, fulfilling a reporting requirement pursuant to federal or state law or informing policy or funding decisions.”

As of September 1, 2023, students applying to our university are prompted to provide information on their gender identity, sexual orientation, and pronouns. Starting November 16, 2023, current students are being encouraged to update this information at any time in MyUNLV, with the assurance that providing this information is completely voluntary.

Student gender identity and sexual orientation information is strictly confidential and accessible only to authorized university personnel when essential for their job responsibilities. The university may utilize this data to generate aggregate reports, ensuring student anonymity. Pronoun information is visible to instructors, graduate assistants, department chairs, administrative assistants, undergraduate academic advisors, and specific student services staff. Other students will not have access to this information, but pronouns may be used in class and shared broadly.

Sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression are sensitive topics that can be difficult for some people. I encourage you to explore the resources below if you feel you have a gap in your understanding of the concepts and the importance of honoring the individual identity of our students.

Respectfully,

Beth Barrie

Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation

News You Can Use

In case you missed it, there’s a new book available about one adult learner’s experience trying to earn an undergraduate degree. Inside Higher Ed published an interview with the author and the New York Times ran an opinion piece she wrote. Another new book was recommended to me recently which may be an interesting companion piece: “Whatever It Is, I’m Against It”: Resistance to Change in Higher Education. I plan to read both and would love to discuss them with you. Please complete this short form if you’re interested in joining the conversation.

Walk-In Wednesdays: This fall OIT provides tech consultations each Wednesday, 10:00am-12:00pm in BEH-235 through November 29.
