Message from the Director

I am delighted and honored to serve as the faculty director of the brand new and highly innovative Teaching and Learning Commons (TLC) at UNLV. The TLC is groundbreaking, because it is designed to serve both faculty and students, bringing together an alliance of teaching and learning under one roof.

I teach in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction. As a professional educator and lifelong learner, my strategies focus on igniting the flames of curiosity and knowledge in both myself and my students every day. I have also developed programs to assist other professors in learning new teaching strategies, especially through technology. For me, there couldn’t be any better abbreviation of Teaching and Learning Commons than TLC, as it also conveys the emotional ingredients needed to develop programs that will increase the academic success of our faculty and students.

In the next few months, we aim to articulate the TLC vision and mission, aligned with UNLV aspirations. We plan to do this through a democratic process by engaging the UNLV community. This will help us move forward in maintaining existing programs, as well as creating new programs, to promote teaching and learning activities at UNLV. We also plan to continuously collect data to assess and evaluate all TLC programs and ensure that we are moving forward in the right direction.

In closing, I highly appreciate this opportunity to serve UNLV in the creation and implementation of the TLC. I believe in TLC’s potential, and I look forward to partnering with you in making this center a success.

Looking forward to talking with you,

Haroon Sahotra

Director
