Charge and Blessing

from Presbyterian Women's Coordinating Team Installation Service

by Janice Catron, retired pastor

Go with the confidence that Christ Jesus will guide your path; he will lighten your load; he will brighten your day. Bear witness to his eternal love in all that you do, and be a living reflection of God's grace, mercy, justice and peace to all whom you encounter. And may the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the power of the Holy Spirit be with you.

Sunday, May 21 | Land Building Lakeside Room | led by Chris Currie

What can the church say (and do and be) that no one else can? What does the church have to say in the face of polarized politics, culture wars, a mass shooting epidemic, and the hollowing out of community? What can we offer that is life-affirming, community-building, and restorative to our society and body politic?

Concluding this Sunday is our intergenerational study of Jesus’ miracles in Frampton Fellowship Hall. Participants of all ages are invited to gather at assigned tables where they engage in discussions, activities, science experiments, and more.

Electing Our New Elders

This Sunday, May 21, we will hold a brief congregational meeting immediately following the 10:30 service for the purpose of electing the slate of elders for the Class of 2026 as presented by the Nominating Committee. All members are strongly encouraged to attend.

Youth "Punchwall" Fundraiser

This Sunday after 8:30 worship and after our congregational meeting following 10:30 worship, the youth will be hosting a “Punchwall Fundraiser.” The wall will be manned by youth and will serve as SCAPC’s big spring 6th-12th grade fundraiser, helping to garner support for upcoming trips and retreats, as well as for our college ministry programs, off-site events, and Youth Group food, snacks, and refreshments. The wall will offer our congregation a plethora of ways to contribute to the continued success of our youth program (from buying some of our last pairs of socks to sponsoring a fun outing at Montreat to providing dinner one night in the fall at Youth Group). This will allow you to contribute based on your interests and feel tied to the work we do with our kids! We hope you will consider contributing!

Youth Sunday School

Instead of a formal lesson this Sunday, 6th-12th grade youth are encouraged to help downstairs with the Punchwall Fundraiser!

Last Youth Group

Sunday evening will be our last youth group of the school year, where we will recap all the lessons we’ve learned and celebrate with the youth’s favorite games. It is also our Senior Goodbye Youth Group, where we ask all our graduating seniors to offer some final words of wisdom and receive a blessing from the other youth as they transition out of our youth group space.

Wear Your Fire Colors

On Pentecost Sunday, May 28, we encourage everyone to wear red, orange, or yellow to church in remembrance of the "tongues of fire" from the Holy Spirit that came to rest on the apostles, replacing their fear with courage to go forth and share Christ's story.

Speaking in Tongues

The Worship and Music committee invites any speaker of a world language other than English to join us in the call to worship on Pentecost Sunday at 10:30 worship. If you are interested in more information, please contact Donna Davis by text at 504.427.5581 or davisd3149@gmail.com

Weekday Small Groups

SCAPC hosts many small groups for weekly and monthly class gatherings. Visit our small groups web page for a full list of topics and meeting times. The recording of last Thursday's Theology Reading Group led by Chris Currie can be found at this link.

Bring Us Your Vases

The Congregational Care Committee is getting low on large floral vases for the SCAPC Flower Ministry. If you have vases to donate, please place them in the bin outside the State Street door. Thank you!

Host a Camp RHINO Dinner

If you (and maybe a friend or two) would like to help us show our out-of-town guests some good old New Orleans hospitality by hosting one of our Camp RHINO groups for dinner on Thursday, June 15 or Thursday, July 13, please email rhino@scapc.org with your address and the number of guests you would be able to accommodate.

Clothing Drive Ended: Thank You, Everyone!

Thanks to all who donated gently used items to the Program of Hope clothing drive. Our clients and volunteers appreciate this congregation’s generosity. We will hold another clothing drive in the fall. Please save additional donations until the next call.

College Grads, Send Us Your News

Are you graduating from college this spring? We'd like to recognize you in an upcoming issue of Quatrefoil and send blessings to you on your future endeavors. Please contact Camille Zander to let us know your post-graduation plans.

Ministry Spotlight: A Touching Story

submitted by Kathy Randall

Two members of SCAPC moved recently, retiring to Arkansas. The send-off was the finale to years of giving back to the New Orleans community as Tom and Valerie Wright packed up and headed to Little Rock. When the loading was complete, a strong, burly moving agent in charge of the task stepped forward and called his team together on the steps of a house across the street from the church. Pointing, he proudly proclaimed “I learned to read at that church” reliving his days of attending STAIR. Now an associate for United Van Lines, he recounted the fact that those ladies “never gave up on me and look where I am today”.

Out of surprise, Valerie shed a grateful tear as a former Site Administrator for STAIR at Jefferson Presbyterian Church years ago. What a sendoff. What a flash back. What an accomplishment for the program that teaches 2nd graders to read.

STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) is one of SCAPC's Community Ministry Partners.
