The Pastor’s Update:#2

Of Hate and Forgiveness

Imagine you are on the altar, addressing your congregation in a sermon. You don’t have a written script; you are focusing on the flow and cohesiveness of your thoughts, and you see a young person approaching you and then he attacks you and stabs you with a knife. Mari Emmanuel, Bishop of Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, New South Wales, Australia was delivering a sermon to his congregation when a young person approached him and attacked him with a knife. The Bishop, who comes from the Assyrian (Nestorian) tradition and runs an independent church, often teaches controversial and provocative messages. However, no one should be attacked for exercising their freedom of speech. Despite the attack, Bishop Emmanuel showed compassion and forgiveness towards his attacker by telling him: "You’re my son, and you'll always be in my prayers." This is an inspiring example of practicing what one preaches.

St. Sarkis Won’t Be The Same Without Digin Mary

Today, the St. Sarkis Community mourns the loss of a dear member, Mrs. Mary Arslanian. She passed away last Tuesday night and will be deeply missed. Mrs. Arslanian had been a lifelong devoted member of our church and had a significant impact on the lives of the young parishioners who were fortunate enough to be her students at our Saturday School. Her kindness, generosity, simplicity, and hospitality will always be remembered.

BOT Executive Positions

The Board of Trustees of our church, who were elected in March and recently approved by the Prelate and the Executive Council, had their first meeting yesterday. They elected Dr. Annita Nerses as the chairwoman, Mr. Simon Bardizbanian as the vice chairman, Mrs. Diane Boyadjian as the secretary, and Mrs. Alina Kochoumian as the treasurer. During the meeting, the Board discussed their plans to uphold St. Sarkis church as a beacon of faith and service for our community.

The Anxious Generation

This week, I started reading "The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness" by Jonathan Haidt. He is a New York Times bestselling author and a social psychologist at NYU. I had previously enjoyed his book "The Happiness Hypothesis". In his latest book, Haidt uses research data to show that phone-based childhood, a term he coined to refer to children and teenagers growing up after 2010 when social media became part of smartphones, is causing an epidemic of mental illness, including severe anxiety, depression, and addictions in teenagers and young adults. I have listened to over half of the book on Audible and believe that it's a valuable read for both parents and young adults.

Freud's Last Session

Annie and I watched "Freud's Last Session" (2023, PG-13, 1h 48m) and enjoyed almost two hours of psychology, philosophy, and existentialism. The movie is set on the eve of World War II and portrays a debate between Sigmund Freud (played by Anthony Hopkins) and the iconic Christian author C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. While there is no evidence that this debate actually took place, I found it fascinating to see the contrasting ideas and sometimes similar experiences of these two important figures from the last century.

The Word of God

The Gospel reading for this Sunday is from John 5:19-30. This Sunday we hear Jesus proclaim: “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life” (John 5:24). According to New International Bible Commentary, “The construction here shows that both hearing and believing are to be taken together. Hearing is not a passive activity only”.

Come to St. Sarkis Church this Sunday and join the worship service.

Prayerfully,

FEAST OF THE HOLY MARTYRS OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

SALT & LIGHT YOUTH GROUP

Reported by Mrs. Janet Tutuyan

We often hear that every once in a while, it‘s good to change things up a bit. While our monthly meetings usually involve small, designated group discussions, last Friday evening, Salt & Light decided to try something a little different. After enjoying a delicious meal of pilaf, chicken and kebab, over 45 participants gathered in the church's beautiful sanctuary. The session began with an ice breaker where members were asked “if society ended, who is the one person, real or fictional, that you would want to team up with?” Answers ranged from the most comforting, like a friend or parent, to the most imaginary, like Batman or Superman, to the most important, Jesus or God. After a couple of laughs, Der Hayr led the group in a discussion which focused on 2 apostles, Thomas and Peter.

He reminded us of the scripture stories of Thomas’ doubt and Peter’s denial and Jesus’ response of love and forgiveness. Of course, everyone in attendance had several questions, which Der Hayr graciously entertained. He concluded the discussion on the bema where he explained some of the symbolic structures and images in the sanctuary, including the representations of the Apostles along the base of the altar, crosses on the walls and the baptismal font. Filled with new knowledge and appreciation, everyone headed back to the main hall for dessert and socializing. Good friends, delicious food and some spiritual nourishment in church…not a bad way to spend a Friday night! If you are a middle or high schooler interested in growing in your faith and community, join us for our next session on Friday, May 10th.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Reported by Mrs. Janet Tutuyan

Last Sunday, a small but engaged group of young boys and girls attended Sunday School. As we continue our journey through the Easter season, this session focused on the many miracles of Jesus and their significance in our Christian faith. As part of the lesson, students completed a “Miracles of Jesus'' crossword puzzle which involved looking up the bible passages focusing on some of those miracles and discussing the details that make these stories so important. The class attended Badarak together, just in time to hear Der Hayr’s homily (karoz) and receive Holy Communion. Then the group returned to their classroom for a painting craft. If you are a young person interested in learning more about your Armenian Christian Orthodox faith in a fun way, join us for our next session on May 5th!

SAGES OF ALL AGES

Reported by Mrs. Hilda Gorgissian

We were so happy to see over fifty participants attending our Spring gathering of Sages of all Ages, on April, 17.

They were all full of energy and enthusiasm to see their friends, and catch up on their lives over a cup of coffee and some delicious desserts. Unfortunately, yesterday we got some very sad news, that we lost one of our valuable members Mrs. Mary Arslanian, who’s generous heart gave so much time, money, and love over the years to St. Sarkis church, to Saturday school, Ladies Guild and Coffee hour. DerNareg, came and spoke about her and we prayed for her beautiful soul. Her friends, who are part of the Sages, shed some tears and shared their beautiful memories they had with her.

After coffee hour, it was time to play one of their favorite games -Bingo. Some of the participants won, nice little gifts or scratch of tickets.

Then at noon, the Sages enjoyed a mouth watering lunch prepared by the committee members and Ramela Maslakian, who always contributes to our lunches (by making beautiful salads and juicy fruits) or donating towards our bingo gifts.

The program continued with a harmonious sing along by our participants and ended with delicious desserts (Baklava made by Madlen Hazarian), mini pastries by Svetlana

Insazhigulyan and Ramela Maslakian (fruits).

Overall it was a wonderful day seeing our Sages smiling faces and vibrant energy they project to the universe.

Many Blessings to all and we are looking forward to see you all on May 15.

RED SUNDAY

This Sunday, April 21, is the fourth Sunday of Eastertide, known as Red Sunday (Garmir Giragi). The name does not have an ecclesiastical origin. Red is the color of blood, and this may be an appropriate time to honor the memory of the early Christian martyrs. Like last week’s Green Sunday, it is a celebration of nature and life, symbolizing rebirth after the Resurrection of our Lord.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE (5.1-14)

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. Amen.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (5.19-30)

Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out-those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
