SAGES OF ALL AGES

Reported by Mrs. Hilda Gorgissian

On Wednesday, December 13th, our Sages of all Ages had their Christmas Celebration. Our guests were welcomed to a festive hall full of eager participants looking forward to meeting with their friends. They enjoyed a delicious homemade meal prepared by Sages committee members. The program continued with a harmonious sing along, and performances by some of the guests with various Christmas songs and music by Mr. Ashot Soghomonyan. A surprise visitor came all the way from the North Pole, Gaghant Baba, who danced with our guests and spread Christmas cheer. At the end, our Sages had a chance to win some beautiful raffle prizes such as hand made cozy blankets which were donated by Mrs. Jilbert Balian, and a variety of decorative household raffles. The afternoon concluded with dessert and coffee. Sages committee members gave guests beautifully handmade Ferrero Rocher chocolate wreaths to take home and enjoy! Thank you all for attending this beautiful gathering.

We wish everyone A Merry Christmas and A Happy & Healthy New Years!!

Our next gathering will be on Wednesday, January 17th, 2024!

VERNISSAGE FUNDRAISER EVENT

Reported by Miss Juliette Hagobian

The AYF New York “Hyortik”, Manhattan “Moush”, and ANC-NY Chapters hosted their third annual NY Vernissage Fundraiser Event last Saturday, December 9th at St. Sarkis Church.

Although Vernissage has previously been hosted in NYC during the springtime, we fruitfully introduced our first Winter Vernissage in Queens this holiday season. With over 100 people in attendance, we continue to appreciate the cultural accomplishments of our local Armenian brands selling goods such as apparel, accessories, food, art, and more. All proceeds from the event, which amounted to over 1,500 dollars, are to be donated to ARS’s Artsakh Relief Fund.

Considering our vendors’ incredible creations, some of which have been handmade by fellow Armenians, Vernissage continues to hold a special place in our AYF community’s heart. Both AYF Hyortik and Moush members recognize how this event not only strengthens bonds in our neighborhood but also unites vendors from different states and underscores the significance of helping our fellow Armenians.

For future Vernissage events, if you are interested in participating as a vendor please contact newyork@ayf.org for more information about selling products. We look forward to hosting another successful NY Vernissage next year along with our members of the Greater New York community!

HAMAZKAYIN NY NOR YERAZ ENSEMBLE

Reported by Mrs. Annette Givelekian

Our Third Practice and Christmas Celebration

In the spirit of camaraderie and festive cheer, our Nor Yeraz dance group recently came together for an unforgettable practice session that concluded with a heartwarming Christmas potluck party. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and dedication as dancers honed their skills, but the real magic happened when the practice transformed into a joyful Christmas celebration.

What makes Nor Yeraz different than other Armenian Dance Groups is the makeup of the dancers which is evenly matched between males and females. The dancers look forward to practices and are excited to be part of Nor Yeraz. A big part of that enthusiasm is due to our two excellent and lively instructors Maria Bechirian and Tigran Dumanyan.

In the world of Armenian dance, success is not merely measured by flawless routines but by the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Our dance group has recently achieved new heights, and the credit goes to the unwavering commitment of our instructors, parent volunteers, Hamazkayin NY and our executive committee. Their support extends beyond the practices as they contribute not only financially but also with their time and enthusiasm. These parents exemplify the true spirit of teamwork.

The recent bake sale at the AYF/ANCA Vernisage event serves as a testament to the power of teamwork within our dance group. What began as a fundraising initiative turned into a remarkable achievement, thanks to the collaborative efforts of our dedicated parents, enthusiastic volunteers, and the guidance of our executive committee.

For the members of Nor Yeraz, this dance group presents a unique opportunity to connect with other Armenian youth, fostering friendships, and strengthening their cultural ties. The schedule for the coming months promises a series of exciting practices and events, ensuring that Nor Yeraz will continue to flourish and represent the rich Armenian heritage through the art of dance.

As Nor Yeraz embarks on this promising journey, the group is set to become a source of cultural pride and a vibrant community for all its members.

Most practices will be held on alternating Fridays between 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the downstairs hall.

ST. JACOB OF NISIBIS

This Saturday, December 16, is the Feast of St. Jacob (Hagop) of Nisibis (Mdzbin). He was born and died in the city of Nisibis, located in what is now southeastern Turkey, an important early Christian center in Asia Minor and a transit point of the caravans traveling east and west. He was ordained Bishop of Nisibis in 320. He participated in the first ecumenical council in Nicaea (325), where he earned great respect from the Emperor Constantine and the other attendees.

St. Jacob sought to find Noah’s Ark as proof for skeptics. On the eve of his ascent to the summit, an angel appeared and told him that he need not climb to the summit and gave him a piece of the Ark. The piece is kept at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

Jacob is one of the most beloved saints in the Armenian Church. He is also honored by the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Coptic Church, and the Eastern Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches.

The heavenly hosts rejoiced at the greatness of your feats by which you in the flesh became like the angels on high; we have you as intercessor for us before the Father in heaven. And we with a joyful voice celebrate your holy memory, O venerable witness of Christ, holy father James; we have you as intercessory for us before the Father in heaven. You decided on severe toils to see Noah’s Ark and from the angel’s hand received a portion of the wood which served the human race as salvation; we have you as intercessor for us before the Father in heaven.”

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (1.1-14)

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

"You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy." He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.

You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (17.1-10)

Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourselves.

"If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him."

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'
