COAT DRIVE TO PROVIDE WINTER WARMTH

FOR ARTSAKH ARMENIANS

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the parishioners and friends of St. Sarkis Church for supporting our various fundraising campaigns to support our dislocated sisters and brothers of Artsakh.

Two weeks ago, on November 7, we launched a Coat Drive to provide winter warmth to Artsakh Armenians. Our initial commitment was to find sponsors for 250 coats. As of today, our generous parishioners and friends have sponsored 528 coats. Please consider sponsoring one or as many coats as you want. These coats are made in Armenia and will be distributed through the Armenian Prelacy's St. Nerses, The Great Charitable Organization.

CALLING ALL PARISHIONERS!

We are so proud that each member of our thriving St. Sarkis community possesses unique talents, expertise, and interests.  Participation by each and every one of you makes an impact on us all. As our parish grows, so do our needs for your participation and impact. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits and fulfillment from volunteering with your fellow parishioners can be enormous. If you are interested in joining any of our team efforts for activities such as annual picnic planning, Saturday and Sunday school activities, choir membership --- we appreciate your help! Also, if you’d like to recommend and plan an activity, we’d love to hear from you and see how we can help make it happen. Please feel free to reach out to Annita Nerses (annitanerses@aol.com, 914-523-2956) or the Church office (stsarkischurch@gmail.com, 718-224-2275)

SAINTS THADDEUS AND BARTHOLOMEW

This Saturday, December 2, the Armenian Church commemorates Saints Thaddeus and Bartholomew, two of the twelve apostles who were the first evangelizers of Armenia, and were martyred there, giving the Armenian Church its apostolic identity and earning them the title, “First Enlighteners of Armenia.”

Thaddeus came to Armenia about 43 AD to preach Christianity. He was martyred in southeastern Armenia. His tomb lies in the Armenian monastery of St. Thaddeus (Iran) where a chapel was built in the third century. Bartholomew is believed to have arrived in Armenia about 66 AD. He was martyred in Hadamakert, southeast of Lake Van.

An apostle is “someone who is sent”—an emissary or ambassador of the Kingdom of God, sent to announce the gospel of Jesus Christ, and authorized to claim men and women’s allegiance to him. “We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (4.1-12)

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (13:1-9)

At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whom blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fall on them-do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem. No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did."

Than he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?' He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down."
