PONTIFICAL VISIT OF

HIS HOLINESS ARAM I TO ST. SARKIS CHURCH

Reported by Dr. Louiza Kubikian

After months of intense preparations and planning by the St. Sarkis Pontifical Committee co-chaired by Dr. Louiza Kubikian and Dr. Annita Nerses, Chair of BOT, St. Sarkis congregation joyfully welcomed His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia. His visit to our church was a 2 day event: “Hrashapar and Achahampuir” on November 17, 2023 and “Youth Conference” on Saturday November 18, 2023. The Youth Conference was co-chaired by Dr. Nyrie Bedrossian & Mr. Veh Bezdikian with participation of youth from Sts. Vartanants & St. Illuminator’s churches.

On Friday November 17, 2023, His Holiness arrived accompanied by His Eminence Anoushavan Tanielian, Prelate and Very Rev. Fr. Sahag Yemishian, Vicar & Pastor of Sts. Vartanants Church. Also present was Rev. Fr. Abraham Malkhassian, Pastor of Holy Martyrs Church. Upon his arrival, Vehapar was greeted by Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor of St. Sarkis Church along with members of the Board of Trustees.

Two Saturday School students greeted Vehapar with flowers while a boy and girl from Salt & Light Youth Group offered the traditional bread and salt which was blessed by His Holiness. An impressive processional of deacons, altar servers and Homenetmen scouts escorted His Holiness into the sanctuary while the Choir sang Hrashapar. Crows of faithful were gathered to welcome him and after a brief service and pontifical message parishioners came forward to receive His Holiness’ blessings.

Following church services, all parishioners were invited to a reception in honor of His Holiness. The festive setting and preparations were made by the very active and talented Ladies Guild members. Saturday School students sang the Pontifical song as Vehapar was led to his table. Der Nareg offered his welcoming remarks and reviewed the growth and achievements of St. Sarkis Church for the past 8 years emphasizing many programs enjoyed by our youth. A brief Question and Answer session followed and the evening ended on a happy note with the singing of Giligia.

We are very grateful and thank His Holiness Aram I for visiting St. Sarkis Church and offering his blessings to our congregation. Many thanks to all the hard-working committee members, Board of Trustees, Ladies Guild, Saturday School, Choir and Deacons who delivered a flawless Pontifical Visit. Also thankful to all those who helped make this evening possible through their generous donations as well as their time and efforts.

Also worthy of mention is during the Pontifical Banquet on November 19, 2023, our very own parishioner and philanthropist, Mr. Karl Alajajian, was presented with the Knight of Cilicia Metal by His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia. A great honor for him and for our church.

YOUTH CONFERENCE WITH HIS HOLINESS ARAM I

Reported by Mrs. Lara Bardizbanian

qg8a0075_orig image

On November 18th, St. Sarkis Armenian Church welcomed over 80 local-area youth as part of a highly-anticipated Youth Conference with His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of The Great House of Cilicia. The event brought together a multifaceted audience of high school students, college students and young professionals. It provided a unique forum to engage in dialogue about identity and faith with the Vehapar.

Those in attendance were members of the Salt & Light Youth Ministry, AYF, various university Armenian clubs, as well as church young adult programs from three respective parishes - St. Sarkis Church, St. Illuminators Cathedral and St. Vartanantz Church. This ambitious program would not have been possible without the diligent preparation of the organizing committee, headed by our very own Nyrie Bedrossian and Veh Bezdikian, both active members in our church community and the Eastern Prelacy, as well as the support of Melineh Mesrobian from St. Vartanantz Church and Armen Morian from St. Illuminators Church.

Upon his arrival, the audience warmly greeted the Vehapar as he took center stage. Veh Bezdikian and Nyrie Bedrossian, the moderators for the evening welcomed His Holiness and the esteemed guests and explained the ambitious agenda ahead (which would include questions and two presentations). The Vehapar’s visit came at a time where there are so many significant challenges currently facing the Armenian nation, the big question at the conference was how can we invigorate and inspire the youth to maintain engagement and enthusiasm in all facets of the community? The conference focused on two main themes – enhancing the youth’s participation in church life and fostering future leadership in the Armenian communities of North America.

The event launched with a remarkable presentation by Isabel Hagobian about leadership. Through her passionate involvement in AYF, teaching history at Saturday School and her consistent commitment to the church community in general, Isabel is an exemplary model of leadership to her peers. She addressed how we can motivate community participation and inspire leaders among our youth so that our communities continue to thrive for future generations. By sharing some of her personal experiences, she explained that youth leadership is something everyone can nurture and develop in whatever environment they find themselves. In the Armenian diaspora it involves exploring and finding your capabilities in church, through advocacy, global connections, youth organizations, entrepreneurship and mentorship.

For the past several months, the committee fielded questions submitted by the young members of the audience and selected a cross-section to be presented to the Vehapar. Each audience member whose question was selected was given a brief introduction and was invited to the center mic to ask their question. The Vehapar thoughtfully addressed various topics beginning with the loss of Artsakh, emphasizing that this loss should become an integral part of the Armenian cause. That all Armenians should engage and feel a sense of ownership in the restoration of Artsakh.

When asked about social pressures and dealing with losing Armenian identity, the Vehapar encouraged those present to stay firmly connected to Armenian traditions and the church. He said there is a fundamental difference between assimilation and integration, and that the youth should focus on integrating the two dimensions of their identity rather than losing identity through assimilation.

The second presentation was by James Mengouchian who addressed the theme of maintaining Armenian Christian faith given the current norms and social pressures in the North American diaspora. James shared his intimate experience connecting with God by coming and serving in church since he was a young boy. He continues to serve on the altar and supports Der Nareg in leading the St. Sarkis Young Adults group. He encouraged the youth to serve on the altar or join the choir, stay connected and to be stronger Armenian Christians since they’re the next generation leading the church community.

The Vehapar responded to James’ presentation by emphasizing that interconnection is very important because it builds up community and enhances our identity. This was followed by a question about how to hold onto faith when Armenia and Artsakh have been ignored by larger world powers. The Vehapar sympathized that there is much confusion, frustration and uncertainty dominating our present feelings as Armenians. However, he stressed that the church has an important role in maintaining hope during these difficult times, and that Christian education and Armenian education go hand-in-hand.

The Vehapar highlighted that the church urgently needs renewal and the youth play a crucial role in that process. It’s imperative that this starts now and that our churches become a place that make sense to young people by which they can identify themselves. He encouraged audience members to initiate a global cyber youth community with strong Armenian values at the helm. He also stressed that leadership does not belong only to the older generation, but to the younger generation because they have something to offer from their experience and coming together will create more dynamic and effective leadership.

Der Nareg offered closing remarks and sincere appreciation for the wisdom and inspiration that His Holiness shared with the young audience. He thanked the Vehapar for this unique opportunity to have the youth speak with him in such an intimate setting.

THANKSGIVING BANQUET WITH HIS HOLINESS ARAM I

Reported by Mrs. Annita Nerses

On Sunday afternoon November 19, Der Nareg, Yeretzgin Annie and members of the St. Sarkis parish and Board of Trustees joined Armenians and dignitaries from around the Northeast for a Thanksgiving Celebration hosted by the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church in honor of the Pontifical visit of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I. The event took place at the elegant Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center.

We are so very proud to report that the afternoon’s program featured the exceptional talents of two of our parishioners, to include Anahit Indzhigulyan, who superbly sang two solo works entitled “Je te veux” (Erik Satie) and “Mardigi yerkuh” (Ashot Satian), and Hooshere Bezdikian, who delighted the audience with a solo work entitled “Caravan”(Khachatur Avetisian) and a beautiful rendition of “Yerevan-Erebuni” (Edgar Hovhannisian) sung as a duet along with Serena Tchorbajian. Hovsep Terterian, a sophomore at Kellenberg Memorial High School, was invited to speak about his experience as a member of the St. Sarkis Salt and Light Youth Ministry. Hovsep spoke eloquently on the impact of the Salt and Light program on his spiritual growth, as well as the importance of the strong bonds of friendship that have been formed with fellow participants.

Most notably, we extend our most heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Karnig Alajajian, who was awarded the “Knight of Cilciia” medal by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I in recognition of Mr. Alajajian’s strong faith, dedicated service and generous support to the Armenian Church.  Mr. Alajajian has faithfully served as a member of the St. Sarkis Board of Trustees for 11 years , a delegate for the National Representative Assembly (NRA), an active Hamazkayin member for 56 years, and an overall pillar of the Armenian community. We are very proud of Mr. Alajajian and his family for this well-deserved award.

COAT DRIVE TO PROVIDE WINTER WARMTH

FOR ARTSAKH ARMENIANS

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the parishioners and friends of St. Sarkis Church for supporting our various fundraising campaigns to support our dislocated sisters and brothers of Artsakh.

Two weeks ago, on November 7, we launched a Coat Drive to provide winter warmth to Artsakh Armenians. Our initial commitment was to find sponsors for 250 coats. As of today, our generous parishioners and friends have sponsored 451 coats. Please help us reach our new (and final) goal of sponsoring 500 coats. Please consider sponsoring one or as many coats as you want. These coats are made in Armenia and will be distributed through the Armenian Prelacy's St. Nerses, The Great Charitable Organization.

Also, we canceled our annual picnic this past September and created an impromptu food drive to support Artsakh. I am proud to report that we transferred the net proceeds of $8,220.00 to the Armenian Relief Society to support their Artsakh relief mission.

Please accept my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation.

Prayerfully,

Fr. Nareg Terterian,

Pastor

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

This Sunday, November 26, is the first Sunday of Advent (from the Latin adventus, meaning "coming"). Advent is a season of penitence, anticipation, and preparation. Advent serves as a reminder of the original anticipation of the birth of Christ, as well as the anticipation for Christ's return. Ideally, Advent should be a time of quiet reflection and meditation.

In modern times the period leading to Christmas is far from calm, and often is stressful and frenetic. It is a good time to remember to pause and reflect on the proper observation of the birth of our Lord and Savior.

In the true spirit of Christmas, remember that this time of the year, although filled with joy for most, can be lonely and sad for many people. Reach out to an elderly person living alone, someone who is ill, or someone who is mourning the loss of a loved one.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-10)

Paul, Silas and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you.

We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia-your faith in God has become known everywhere.

Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (12.13-31)

Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.

For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
