Welcoming Covenant
In the name of God and Jesus Christ, the Hingham Congregational Church welcomes all who seek to know and worship God, and invites everyone to join in our mission through participation and leadership of the congregation.
As a community of faith, we take seriously the biblical call to love God and our neighbors as ourselves, and recognize that, although we are many members, we are one.
❖ We celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.
❖ We rejoice in our diversity of views and understandings of our shared faith.
❖ We affirm relationships based on love, commitment, and mutual respect.
❖ As is stated in our by-laws, we strive for righteousness, justice and peace.
It is with this spirit and the love of God that we openly welcome all persons, inclusive of every race, ethnicity, class, age, gender, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and inclusive of any others, to journey with us as we move forward with the work of this church in the world.

*Opening Prayer
Cleansing God, who restores us and sets us on life-giving pathways, we thank you for this hour of prayer and reflection. Please give us the courage to look inside this morning and let go of anything that is weighing us down. Open us, we pray, to new ideas and new directions...
(silence)
*Lord’s Prayer
Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition — and we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.
*Words of Hope
*Gloria
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty victorious, your great name we praise.

Message for Children James Allen
The children bring their offering forward as the congregation sings:
You are the seed that will grow a new sprout,
You’re the star that will shine through the day.
You are the yeast and a small grain of salt, a beacon to glow in the night.
Go, my friends, go to the world, proclaiming love to all:
Messengers of my forgiving peace, eternal love.
After the Children’s Message, children may go to their church school classes.

Ministry of the Word
Scripture Reading: Mark 1:21-28 Erin Swenson Gorrall, Liturgist
They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.’ At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee

GREEN TIP: COMPOSTING UPDATE FROM TOWN
The Hingham DPW and the Cleaner Greener Hingham Committee have recently announced several options for composting. In the Jan. 13, 2024 e-mail from DPW Superintendent, Randy Sylvester writes this: “By offering food waste composting, we are reducing the Town’s cost to dispose of materials, reducing methane, which is 25 more times as potent as CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere, and creating clean organic soil.” This aligns with Hingham’s commitment to be “Net Zero by 2040.” The approaches are backyard and curbside composting. You are urged to read that e-mail and consider one of the options outlined there. There is also a Composting Survey at the very bottom of the Hingham Anchor article, which, if you have not responded it, please check it out. Thank you.
