A Memorial Day Tribute

During his famous inauguration speech on March 1, 1861, the newly elected 16 th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, made a passionate plea for unity. Calling upon “the better angels of our nature,” he offered a vision of hope for a country divided by slavery and states’ rights. Yet his plea fell on deaf ears because never before had the hearts of our countrymen been so filled with ill will and fear. Thus, the threat of war quickly became a reality, and the Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in American history broke out, ravaging the country for nearly four years. But what have we learned from this tragedy, and from the many tragic wars that have followed?
Join Rev. Su Choy as she explores possible reasons for our collective aggression, sharing ways we can grow spiritually as a nation. As we honor our fallen this Memorial Day, each one of us can discover new ways we can ‘invoke our better angels,” taking individual responsibility for ensuring a peaceful world.
