THE FUTURE OF UNITY WINDWARD

Unity Windward has been a beacon of light on the windward side of Oahu since 1982. New Thought was brought to Kailua and Kaneohe by Reverend Phil Smedstad from Unity Church of Hawaii. For many decades the community of Unity Windward shared the teachings of progressive Christianity, inclusivity, universalism, and the many pathways to God. Prayer as an affirmative practice, rather than a plea to a God ‘out there’ has been a common practice in Unity, and prayer is the foundation of actively living a consciousness of prosperity, health, communion, and Truth.

Our spiritual community has faced both challenges, and opportunities, which have provided spiritual growth for all. Like many churches in 2024, and all over the world, Unity Windward has faced financial hardship. Those willing and able to serve on the Board of Trustees of Unity Windward have conferred with consultants from Unity Worldwide Ministries to determine our best course of action. Considering our current finances, and the experience of other Unity churches around the world, we’ve determined that at the end of March, Unity Windward will offer to our landlord, a 30-day notice and intention to vacate the space. In order to responsibly move forward into the future, we have determined it best to leave our space at the end of April. 

Unity Windward will take on new form and new shape. We will still operate under the tax laws that we have been operating under since 1982, yet the community may become a Unity Study Group. Rather than being governed by a Board and By-Laws, a Study Group operates by consensus. Other options and possibilities are also being taken into consideration.

LENT & LETTING GO

OF OUTCOMES

On this Palm Sunday, we will continue to observe the Lenten season, and consider something more to let go. Letting go of outcomes is a way to let God be God in our lives. Although, our human imaginations picture specific results, oftentimes the divine, and the highest and best show up in unexpected, even unplanned ways. Trusting that every circumstance is for our evolution and spiritual growth is how we can come to experience that nothing and no one is against us. 

Many people who witness Jesus enter into Jerusalem had specific outcomes in mind, yet humility, love, service, and spiritual strength shone brightly through during the events of Holy Week. 

The core teachings of Jesus in the Beatitudes encourage each of us to realize that we’re blessed, even in times of trial or challenge. Spiritual transformation expands and grows, when even the merest of willingness takes root in us. Embracing and allowing all outcomes is how we let go of limited seeing, and thereby awaken to divine vision.

LET GO OF THE PHYSICAL, LIVE THE SPIRITUAL

LET GO, LET GOD

According to the accounts of his life, Jesus let go of the physical when the crucifixion took place. The Christ mystery of resurrection has been an expansive Truth throughout the history of humanity. His example of eternal life has been a model for each of us to follow, and our brother, Jesus shows us how to live. 

Easter is a celebration of the proof that death is not real, and also the crux of the Christ mystery which surrenders limitation and lack in order to triumph over the illusions of physicality. 

Join us for either or both of 2 services on Sunday, March 31. We’ll be at Kalama Beach Park at 7am, and also in the Sanctuary at 10am at the Kaneohe Atrium.

THE FIVE HINDRANCES TO SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

When we’re unaware of the five hindrances, they tend to take over and cloud the mind, preventing us from seeing clearly and making wise choices. The resulting state of poor discernment leads to unskillful actions, further impeding our ability to proceed on our spiritual path. The good news is that, once we’ve identified the five hindrances, we begin to notice how they negatively impact our behavior and overall well-being. Then we are no longer bound to their seductive power, and can freely move forward on our journeys of awakening.

Is meditation a mysterious practice for you? Is meditation a precious practice which you consider priceless? Come to consider what type, form, or method of meditation best suits you. 

Join us at Unity Windward on Monday evenings at 6:30 in the Sanctuary, where we’ll gather to consider practices to benefit your life through the practice of meditation. Meditation has been shown to reduce stress, reduce anxiety, reduce memory loss, increase mood, increase centering in love, and increase self-awareness. Available for a love offering.
