Sunapee Happenings

"Lunch with Friends"

Spring hasn’t quite sprung yet here, tho most of the snow is melting away, there’s been an historic, glorious, astronomical event on Monday, as the shadow of the moon raced across the sun, giving us a total solar eclipse.

Scattered crocus and daffodils are determinedly popping up through the turf, and yet the forecast still hopscotches between possibility of rain, snow and or warm sunshine.  Anything goes!

SUNAPEE SPOTLIGHT

Please let us know which time you prefer to attend the public information session at The Livery in Sunapee Harbor. This will help us allocate resources for all participants. CUE THE MUSIC

Tomorrow, April 11: Ordinary Elephant

7:30 pm

Then on April 25:  Garret Rogers

The Flying Goose Pub

Interestingly, if not ironically, in order to accomplish this new work, Crystal and Pete had to set aside the work they'd done previously, as a veterinary cardiologist and a computer programmer, respectively. The two met at an open mic in College Station, Texas, in 2009 and soon moved to Houston together. With her on acoustic guitar/lead vocals and him on clawhammer banjo/harmony vocals, the work of music continued on the side as both had full-time jobs, until they threw all caution to the wind and hit the road in an RV.

Friday, April 12: Wes Aldrich takes the mic for the first hour of Sunapee Coffeehouse, then

you’re invited to participate in the second hour of Open Mic.

Wes Aldrich's songs speak to the introvert as he vocalizes the struggles of daily life through his music. With his soft melodies and poignant lyrics, he's reaching out to connect to the disconnected. To help create a safe space for all of us to be vulnerable.

Inspired by the likes of John Prine, Ryan Adams, Alice in Chains, and more, his music has a distinct familiarity while still maintaining his originality.

Since 2010 Wes Aldrich has been writing, recording, and producing music at Carriage House Studios, in Southern New Hampshire. Playing and touring in the band's Hug the Dog and Ballroom Sofa, he's had the opportunity to gig all over the US, including SXSW festival in Austin, TX, CBGB Festival in NYC, The Knitting Factory Los Angeles, CA, and more.

After releasing his 2021 solo album "Bullies and Saints", he decided to put a deeper focus on his solo career. In 2022 he produced a second full production EP called "Balance" where he plays bass, guitar, keys, and did all of the vocal parts/arrangements. He's now ready to share his work from the last two years and he's hitting the road again, excited to reconnect with music listeners.

Upper Valley Symphony Orchestra

Presented by Upper Valley Music Center

Sunday, April 14, 3 pm

Suggested $20 adult, under 18 free

Payment collected by UVMC at the door (credit, Venmo, Apple pay, cash, and check accepted)

The Upper Valley Symphony Orchestra explores an exciting and varied program under the direction of Mark Nelson.

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, inspired by an 1881 poem of the same name, features Marshall Meade, whose violin solo represents the bird’s flight in this pastoral and lyrical piece. In Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, commissioned by the LA Philharmonic as a celebration of the post-pandemic return to the stage, inspiration comes from the spiritual guides of the Huichol people of Mexico and their traditional music. Haydn’s Drum Roll symphony and Janáček’s fanfare round out the concert with music full of grandeur and joy.

Formerly known as Upper Valley Chamber Orchestra, UVMC’s longest-running ensemble has taken on a new name to represent the growth of participation in recent years. Learn More

Presented by Lebanon Opera House

Thursday, April 18, 4 & 7 pm

Rated G, 103 minutes

This is a FREE event; registration is appreciated.

Often considered the greatest Hollywood musical ever made, Singin’ offers a lighthearted depiction of Tinsel Town in the late 1920s, with the film’s stars (including Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Rita Moreno, and Jean Hagen) portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to “talkies”.

The Oscar-nominated film has three songs on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest movie music – including Singin’ in the Rain, Make ‘Em Laugh, and Good Morning – with call-backs in recent films such as La La Land, Brooklyn, and Silver Linings Playbook.

Theatrical fun and uproarious comedy abounds on stage in White River Jct.

Briggs Opera House

Something Rotten is a hilarious mash-up of 16th Century Shakespeare and 21st Century Broadway. It tells the story of the creation of the world's first musical. It's bawdy, boisterous and brilliant. And that's just the opening number. Select the date below to order your tickets. Seating is general seating and the house opens 30 minutes before the performance. If you have special needs for accommodation in the theatre, email info@wethepeopletheatre.com.

LOCAL LIBRARIES

Insects such as bees and butterflies are helpful, and in some cases, essential, in pollinating many of our food crops such as apples, berries, and vegetables. In recent years, there has been a significant decline in the populations of these wild pollinators. Planting patches of flowers, wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and flowering trees with an emphasis on the use of native plants can encourage and support natural pollinators as well as enhance backyard landscapes. Recommendations will be presented on creating a pollinator habitat in your yard.

UPCOMING EVENTS

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day!

April 27, 2024

On Saturday, April 27th, 2024, the Town of Sunapee will once again be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide effort to take back prescription drugs. Medicines that are no longer needed but remain in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse, including theft. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. In addition, many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them away or simply throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards. The Take-Back campaign, which began in 2010, provides a safe way for people to dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs.

The Sunapee Police Department is a registered collection site. On Saturday, April 27th, Sunapee residents are encouraged to participate in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign. An officer will be available at the Sunapee Safety Services Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect your expired or unwanted prescription drugs.

NOTE: If you cannot bring your unwanted medications on April 27th, the Sunapee Police Department has a Medication Drop Box in the lobby of the Safety Services Building which is available for use Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Green-Up Day - CHOOSE YOUR ROADS! Visit projectsunapee.org to register and choose which roads you wish to clean up this year. If you do not see your road, it has already been taken.

UNTIL NEXT WEEK
