Summer Sun Safety

Do your summer plans bring you outdoors? If you are like so many Americans, summertime means spending weekends on the boat, at the beach or in a pool. We all need sunshine--it can improve our mood and help our bodies produce Vitamin D. The downside to too much sun exposure is skin cancer. 

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and sun spots on your skin. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented, and when it is found and treated early, it can often be cured.

Take simple steps today to protect your skin:
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes.
Be aware of your risk factors for skin cancer (things like childhood sunburns and a family history of the disease increase your risk) and get screened regularly by your physician or a dermatologist. Perform regular self-checks using the ABCDE rule for identifying suspicious moles. If you notice any moles changing or unusual patches of skin, don't put off seeing a doctor. Early detection and treatment can mean better outcomes!

Is It Alzheimer's?

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is not a normal part of aging. The disease usually strikes individuals 65 years and over, but younger people are not without risk. While there is no cure for Alzheimer's, there are treatments available that can help slow the progression of the disease and help manage symptoms. Early detection can make a huge difference in the quality of life of someone who is diagnosed with this disease.

Spoleto Festival USA through June 11th
Each May the Holy City comes alive during this premier performing arts festival. Charleston's churches, theaters, and courtyards host performances by renowned artists as well as emerging performers across the genres of opera; theater; dance; and chamber, symphonic, choral, and jazz music.

Piccolo Spoleto Festival through June 11th
The smaller, sister festival to Spoleto, Piccolo focuses on Southeastern artists and includes visual arts exhibits, classical music, jazz, dance, theatre, poetry readings, children's activities, choral music, ethnic cultural presentations, crafts and film.

Charleston Carifest June 22-25th
This annual four-day festival is a Caribbean Carnival celebration honoring Caribbean American Heritage Month. There will be plenty of food, fun, music, and costumes as well as education and culture throughout the weekend. Don't miss this "creative and artistic expression of Caribbean people."
