There are some changes ahead for the library. The library will be updating our staff-oriented library systems on August 1 through August 6. We're excited for the change, because it'll help us help our community better, but we ask you for your patience during the initial transition time as we navigate any challenges, expected and unexpected, during this change. Here are some dates to remember for these transitions.
On August 1 through August 3 the library will be doing manual, handwritten and logged, check-ins and checkouts during these days. You will need your card during this time since we will not be able to look up your account while we are in transition.
The library will be closed to patrons on August 5 and August 6 to stress test the new system, resolve any initial growing pains, and conduct further staff training with our new system.
Please read this letter from our director, Dan Perkins, to learn more about the change, and how it will affect you.

Historic Huguenot Street
81 Huguenot Street, New Paltz, NY 12561
(845) 255-1660
Helping visitors understand the historical forces that shaped America
At the ten-acre National Historic Landmark District in New Paltz, New York, visitors experience over three hundred years of history across seven historic stone-house museums, a reconstructed 1717 French Church, the community’s original burying ground, and a replica Esopus Munsee wigwam. Period rooms and exhibits tell the stories of a French-speaking Protestant settlement as it evolved over time, and also reveal the history of the area’s Indigenous and enslaved African peoples and Dutch settlers.
Historic Huguenot Street envisions a nationally recognized historic site that will inspire guests to think in new ways about American history while also carrying forward the conversation about the relationship between past and present.
Our Historic Huguenot Street Tour Pass is good for one guided tour for two adults and two children (under age 13). For more information on tour times and hours of operation, please visit www.huguenotstreet.org or call (845) 255-1660 x 100.

Saturday Morning Book Club's July pick
|
The Saturday Morning Book Club will have their next meeting on Saturday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. They'll be discussing Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.
Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist. – Goodreads

Adult Fiction Book Club's July selection
On Friday, July 26, at 3:00 p.m., the adult fiction book club will meet in our reading room to discuss The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray.
A summer house party turns into a whodunit when Mr. Wickham, one of literature’s most notorious villains, meets a sudden and suspicious end in this mystery featuring Jane Austen’s leading literary characters.
The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a house party, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.
Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed. The unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang. – Goodreads

We've been enjoying Summer Storytime and Summer Crafting Caboodles outdoors and will also be hosting Summer STEM outside, weather permitting.

This week at our Wednesday special event, we welcomed critters from Two-by-Two Animal Haven. Due to the heat, our petting zoo had to move indoors but we all enjoyed meeting and learning about their animal ambassadors, including a ball python snake, a bearded dragon, a tortoise and a hare (who are best friends!)... and a kangaroo! We also learned about some amazing animal traits, such as bearded dragons have a third eye under their skin to detect the shadows of birds of prey, like hawks, trying to catch them!

Franklin’s Trees
by A.J. Schenkman
This gem of a children's book has a little something for everybody. It's set in Hyde Park, so it has local appeal. Its main character is our 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, so it has national appeal. It's central theme, FDR's love and appreciation of trees, gives it an environmental appeal. This book is beautifully illustrated by Lauren Reese and also happens to be written by a Wallkill history teacher!
