As a Child Legacy board member and donor, Dr. Dacia Napier visits Malawi at least once a year. A few weeks ago, she made the trek to our campus, bringing her brother, her nephew, and a family friend to round out her team. Dacia was thrilled to witness the significant progress since her last visit, both in healthcare and agriculture. 

Child Legacy Community Hospital is considered a beacon of hope to the people. Our facility has been bustling with activity this month—delivering 180 babies, providing essential healthcare to nearly 6,000 people, administering hundreds of vaccinations to Under 5s, conducting nearly 3,000 lab tests and treating over 500 malaria positive cases. “The hospital’s presentation of its latest stats reaffirms just how vital our services are in this rural community. Without them, so many women, men, and children would suffer.” Dr. Napier noted.

She was also encouraged to see the flourishing coffee plants and macadamia trees, symbols of the sustainable practices we are instilling together with Moyo Goods, PBC. That same growth extends well beyond the fields, as local employees eagerly learn to operate new equipment, enhancing their skills and future prospects.

Education is the heartbeat of Child Legacy’s sustainability plan for rural Africa. Part of our ability to retain skilled healthcare workers at our hospital is based on offering quality education options for their children. Child Legacy primary school does just that. Sarah, a visiting intern from Yale was so captivated by her experience teaching at our primary school that she decided to extend her stay on campus. Her dedication is a testament to the profound impact that our collective efforts have on the lives we touch. 

All of us can use our skills and talents to enrich lives around the world. Among other outreach, father and son, Kyle and Turner organized a volleyball camp for all of the children at our primary school and the joy was contagious! These dedicated volunteers shared their great enthusiasm for the game, igniting spirits, and knitting the community closer together through sport.

Dacia and her team’s visit was marked by delightful encounters, such as meeting a friendly hedgehog, and seeing the radiant smiles of children as they received new school supplies, art materials, and t-shirts. These simple gifts—papers, crayons, and baby clothes for the hospital's newest members—spark creativity and comfort. But the most impactful experience of their trip was taking part in the drilling of a new well.

Having never had a clean water source, the people of Bokola Village had been drinking, cooking, and cleaning with dirty water from a murky creek over a half mile away away from their homes. Drilling this new well was a fundamental step towards healthier lives for all the families there and it also freed up time for women and girls who spend hours hauling water 5 to 6 times per day. You can provide an opportunity like this for a village or school in need for $5,000.

Clean water is essential to survival and is a major component of our work. Prioritizing safe drinking water is something that has been integral to the heart of CLI since the organization began in 1987. The effort gained great momentum in 2007, when Jeff and Karen Rogers were trained in the well repair process back in Houston, Texas. They took this skill into the heart of Africa, going around the nation of Malawi from village to village with a locally trained team, repairing wells, teaching health and hygiene, and sleeping in tents along the way to restore safe water to the people. Now, 17 years later, Child Legacy has repaired over 5,600 broken water wells, benefiting over 10 million Malawians!

One of the many villages we care for is called Mandala. After a number of those living there were getting sick from bad water, the village chief came to CLI to ask for help getting the well working safely.

A grateful villager shares, "Child Legacy International’s CEO, Dr. Jeff Rogers, and the well repair team has repaired a water well today that supplies over 100 families in the village. It was broken a year ago and our people were using contaminated water as an alternative. Today, CLI has brought back the smiles to families who were struggling to get clean water to live healthy lives. We are so thankful.”

One of our favorite things to do is to provide employment for amazing people. Megrina Gaisi has worked at the CLI Hospital as an Attendant since June 1st, 2017. Her days are spent doing a number of important tasks to keep the hospital running smoothly. A primary role of her position is making sure that the hospital remains clean. She helps maintain a sanitary environment by mopping, scrubbing, and dusting the floors and surfaces, but also does things like escorting patients to wards and preparing instruments for sterilization.

Megrina shares, “I’m so happy working at CLI. Working at CLI has helped my life in so many ways…I built a house, I bought land where I do farming, on top of that, I have 5 children and I’m able to pay their school fees. The year I started work at CLI, my first child got selected to secondary school, I managed to pay his school fees and now he is a policeman.” 

What a blessing to be able to provide fulfilling work that furthers our mission and transforms the lives of families!
