Your semi-monthly Recreation activities information.
WE MAKE YOUR FREE TIME, FUN TIME!

GREETINGS,

Registration for summer programs, including our day camps, opened online April 1. Many sections filled on the first day. Don't delay any more in registering! Greenwich residents need to verify residency for 2024 prior to registering for any Recreation activities. Greenwich residents who may qualify for financial assistance in paying for youth activities should read below and visit our website for more details.

As spring sports activities kick-off, this is a perfect time to remind parents of youth athletes to keep it fun, safe, and positive for the children. The National Alliance for Youth Sports and the Positive Coaching Alliance provide many resources to assist parents and coaches in making this possible; more details found below.

Information on summer activities, Department policies, and activities at Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center are found below. Additionally, see what Special Events are scheduled in the Greenwich community over the next few months. Tomorrow is our annual Kite Flying Festival at Greenwich Point. Save the date of Monday, May 27 for the annual Jim Fixx Memorial Day races, Saturday, June 29 for the Sandblast Sand Sculpture Festival, and Saturday, July 6 for the annual Fireworks Displays.

Except for Town holidays, the Parks and Recreation Office at Town Hall is open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We encourage you to make an appointment between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Most business can be done online. Office staff are available by email; feel free to contact us.

Girls - Get in the Game!

The Positive Coaching Alliance has identified 10 benefits for girls who participate in sports. While the PCA can provide supporting studies, I personally can attest to experiencing many of these 10 benefits and additional ones too, such as improved self-discipline and time management skills.

National Alliance for Youth Sports

Do it for your children!

Youth sports coaches, many of which are volunteers, are the foundation of youth sports in the U.S. Those who are trained and educated on the many different aspects involved with coaching kids are best prepared to provide participants with a fun-filled, safe and rewarding experience.

NAYS Coach Training & Membership Program is the most widely used coach training program in the nation, having trained more than 3 million coaches since its inception in 1981. NAYS Coach Training is available online for coaches to complete at their convenience.

Read more, and get your free training in a variety of areas including basic youth sports safety and first aid, instilling sportsmanship, concussion training, bullying prevention training. Email Sue Snyder, Recreation Superintendent, with questions. We want your children to be well cared for!

Withdrawal Policy for Recreation Activities other than Day Camps

Once a participant is registered for a Recreation activity (excluding our day camps), a request to withdraw and receive a credit will be granted when the request is received in writing prior to the start of the activity. There is a $20 administrative fee per section for credits. Should someone withdraw from an activity after it has begun, the credit will be pro-rated based on the time remaining in the activity when the withdrawal is requested.

The general policy of the Recreation Division is that we do not issue refunds for a Recreation activity unless it has been cancelled. Registrants assume full responsibility for any changes in their personal life, which may affect their ability to participate. Please read all registration information carefully and contact us prior to registering if you have any questions.

Waitlist Policy for Recreation Activities other than Day Camps

Once maximum enrollment has been reached for activity registration, a participant may elect to be placed on a waitlist. Should additional registration spots become available, those on the waitlist will be contacted in numerical order. Once contacted, if the person is still interested in enrollment in the activity, they will have two business days to make payment for the activity fee. If complete payment is not made within two business days, that person will be removed from the waitlist and the next person waitlisted will be contacted. If the waitlisted person is no longer interested in the activity, then the next person on the waitlist will immediately be contacted. Additionally, if the waitlisted person declines to respond to the Department of Parks & Recreation within two business days, the next person waitlisted will be contacted.

Withdrawal Policy for Day Camps

This policy will be enforced for those who wish to withdraw from Adventurers Camp, Kamp Kairphree, and Music and Art Camp. Written withdrawal request prior to June 1 will be provided a full credit (100%) for the fee paid, less a $20 administrative fee per section. Written withdrawal request June 1 or after, but prior to the first day of camp section, will be provided only half credit (50%) for the fee paid and less a $20 administrative fee per section. Written withdrawal request June 1 or after, and after the camp section has begun, will be provided half credit (50%) for the fee paid, also pro-rated based on the remaining time in the section, and less a $20 administrative fee per section.

Waitlist Policy for Day Camps

The general Waitlist Policy applies to the day camps of Adventurers Camp, Kamp Kairphree, and Music and Art Camp; however, there will be a fee of $20 assessed to be placed on the waitlist for each section of camp. Should the participant be taken off the waitlist and enrolled in the camp section, the $20 fee will be applied to the camp section fee. Once contacted, the person will have two business days to pay the balance due for the camp section. If the person remains on the waitlist and is not enrolled in the camp, there will be NO refund and NO credit for the $20 fee. This is to ensure that only those seriously interested in attending the day camp will place themselves on the waitlist.
