On May 20, Redwood City Library Foundation hosted a Spring fundraising event where author and illustrator pair Jorge Tetl Argueta and Elizabeth Gómez shared the process of collaborating on their book Bilingüe, Superhéroe / Bilingual, Superhero. Jorge Tetl Argueta is a celebrated Salvadoran poet and writer, whose bilingual children's books have received numerous awards. Elizabeth Gómez is a Redwood City based artist and children’s book illustrator, who also creates community murals (such as the mural in the Downtown Library)! Discussion was facilitated by Interim Library Director Sarah LaTorra.
The 50 attendees also saw excerpts from Joanna Rudnick's feature film STORY AND PICTURES BY, the first feature documentary to take audiences behind the scenes to meet the boundary pushers who create children’s picture books. Thanks to the generosity of event sponsors (listed below), Project READ families attended as our special guests.
This was the first author-illustrator fundraiser the Foundation has hosted and we were very pleased with the enthusiasm of attendees. Event goals included engaging more library patron families, expanding our base of future library donors, raising RCLF visibility, and sharing the call to action: Read to the children in your life; there are amazing and inclusive books available!
Event Sponsors: Kaiser Permanente, Monterra Credit Union, John & Linda Bauer, James Escoto, Richard & Judy Imperiale, Carol Johnson, Barbara & Jerry Pierce, Juan Raigoza
