Guitarist Dave Styker gets around. You might have heard him leading his own group or as a featured soloist with many of the masters of jazz. Gary Giddins in the Village Voice called him "one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, moved to New York City in 1980, and joined organist Jack McDuff’s group (1984-85). From 1986 to 1995, Stryker played with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. He has also performed with Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy Heath, Kevin Mahogany, Eliane Elias, Joe Lovano, Steve Slagles, and many others. His CD As We Are made Best of 2022 in Downbeat Readers Poll, Jazz Times, and many others, and hit #1 for 2 weeks on the JazzWeek radio chart. Groove Street is Dave’s most recent CD and features Bob Mintzer on tenor sax along with his working trio of Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums. The trio recently opened up for Steely Dan’s 2022 summer tour.

The Summer Jazz Sensations are FREE and will continue each Wednesday from noon to 1:30pm at Dante Park through Wednesday, September 18. In the event of rain, concerts will be on the Friday immediately following each Wednesday performance, same time, same place. Tasty treats from local eateries will be available for purchase at some of the performances (check the schedule on our website for details). We are still looking for additional local eateries to sell snacks and beverages. If you are interested, contact us via email at info@lincolnsquarebid.org or call us at 212-581-3774

New Map of Public Restrooms

The City recently launched the “Ur In” Luck initiative to help New Yorkers locate and use our city’s nearly 1,000 public restrooms. The initiative included building an interactive Google Maps layer to help you find the nearest public restroom, and the city is also building 46 new restrooms and renovating 36 existing ones to improve accessibility and energy efficiency.

2024 Fresh Food for Seniors Program

Council Member Gale Brewer’s office offers $15 worth of locally grown fruits and vegetables for just $10 for older adults on the West Side every two weeks. The program is pay-as-you-go, not a subscription. The first pickup day is Wednesday, July 10, at Goddard Riverside's Older Adult Center (593 Columbus at 88th St). You can place an order for that first day at the District Office (563 Columbus Avenue) on Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, then pick up your first bag of produce on July 10 from 1–3 pm. (You can then place your next order at Goddard on that day for pickup on July 24). Orders and pickups are also available at Project FIND Hamilton House (141 W 73rd St.; 212-787-7710); NCJW Council Lifetime Learning (241 W 72nd St.; 212-687-5030); Lincoln House Outreach (303 W 66th St.; 212-875-8958); hours will be different than Goddard, so call for details.

Required Signage in NYC Businesses

The State and City require various types of signs to be posted in bars and restaurants. Make sure you have all required signs posted by using this checklist from the NYC Department of Small Business Services and NYC Hospitality Alliance. By July 1, all NYC employers must also post the required multilingual Know Your Rights poster where employees can easily see it. Read more about worker rights here.

Complete This Survey for a Chance to Win

The NYC Department for the Aging (NYC Aging) is conducting a Service Needs Assessment Survey. This will help NYC Aging better understand the needs of older New Yorkers and their caregivers. NYC Aging will use the information for program planning, advocacy, and better understanding unmet needs. All responses are anonymous, but you can provide contact information if you’d like to be entered into a drawing for a chance at a giveaway of a $50 gift card at the end of September 2024. Find the survey and more information here.

It’s Festival and Parade Season

In the warmer months, streets are often closed due to local festivals, parades, and fairs. Visit Manhattan Community Board 7’s website for a list of events scheduled for the Upper West Side, or find a full list of NYC street fairs here
