Hello Summer

Goodbye May, Hello June!

We welcome the new month of June and all the summer vibes that come with it. This year, the June solstice occurs on June 21, marking the first day of summer. June's birthstone is the pearl and has two birth flowers for the month, roses and honeysuckle.

Our North Port participant Ben and Lora Carter, ADT Manager for Port Charlotte and North Port, are excited for all the fun things that are planned for this summer. If you are looking for a summer program for an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities, contact Krystal Heater at kheater@lovelandcenter.org to learn all the details.

Center Spotlights

Dylan has shown so much growth in interacting with peers and engaging during activities. He also has shown more independence and is working on projects by himself.

Great job, Dylan!

Tiffany has shown that she can be a great helper to staff and peers. She will ask if she can help assist a peer and will gather supplies for an activity. Her mom reports that Tiffany has shared that she loves coming to Loveland Center. The feeling is mutual, Tiffany, we love having you!

People of Determination by Alaa Elassar, CNN

Bassma Mohamed stares at her reflection in the giant mirror hanging on the studio wall. Dressed all in black except for the purple on her glasses, she is focused and unwavering in her determination to follow her ballet teacher and perfect every plié, relevé and tendu.

Her mom, wearing a denim skirt and green headscarf, is huddled with a group of other mothers in the doorway, watching with pride as she jumps and twirls.

When Bassma [center] meets her mother's eye, she winks at her and smiles. Photo credit: Heba Khamis for CNN

There is nothing out of the ordinary at this small ballet studio in [Alexandria], Egypt, except many of the dancers have special needs, including Bassma. More...

Spotlight on the Arts

Meet Jessica Baird

Visual Arts Instructor

Meet Jessica Baird, our new Visual Arts Instructor. Jessica’s role at Loveland Center is to create a visual arts program for our participants at the Venice, Bradenton, Port Charlotte, and North Port locations.

When Jessica was asked what drew her to Loveland, she said it was because she wanted to work for a nonprofit, while incorporating creativity. Jessica stated that Loveland Center is a one-of-a-kind place. She felt that from the start, it was clear the employees and participants were very special and kind. Jessica shared that the smallest act of kindness can make a participant’s day. Her favorite aspect about working with the participants is making them happy by helping them express their creative ideas. Jessica said, “watching a participant come out of their shell when we talk about a project they are interested in, is very rewarding.” More...

Recaps

Our Port Charlotte Loveland Center participants took part in Adopt-an-Office week with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office in honor of National Police week. This special week in May pays recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Our participants delivered treats for the CCSO and thanked them for their service.

Equality Through Opportunity

Our Adult Day Training (ADT) programs incorporate community integration into their weekly calendars, ensuring that each participant has the opportunity to pursue their interests, desires, and goals. Kim from our North Port center enjoyed bowling on a recent trip to Bowland. Community integration enables persons with disabilities to fully participate in all types of activities.

Would you like to join us as a community integration volunteer ? To learn more about the volunteer opportunities at our North Port and Port Charlotte centers, contact Caryn McCullough at cmccullough@lovelandcenter.org or call (941) 233-0547.

The Wilson-Wood Foundation's grant of $25,000 in August 2022 enabled Loveland to begin satisfying the demand of its Adult Day Training program, and it is also ensuring that our community members with intellectual and developmental disabilities are safe when traveling to and from community events, our center, and for after-program-hours opportunities.
