Our patrons have been SO eager to register for our great August programs and events, and your wait is almost over!

Registration will open online at 10am on Monday, July 22nd for almost all of our special August programs!

Escape Room, Paint & Sip, Line Dancing, Nutty Scientist, Teen Amazing Race, and more! Many of these programs are limited in space, so make sure you get in to the programs you really want!

To celebrate, join us for our Mid Summer Registration Party on Monday!

Stop by anytime between 1pm and 4pm - you can sign up for August events that still have spaces available while you're here. Kids and teens who stop by will receive a coupon for a FREE book from our Friends Books Sale and a sweet, frosty treat!

The only events that do not have online registration are our two (Not-So) Wild Animal Stuffies classes for ages 6 to 12. Registration for these will open at 1pm, in person, at our Mid Summer Registration Party!

It's not too late to get in on the Summer Reading fun!

Our reading programs run through August 10th; stop in for more info and to enter your books!

FOR KIDS

ages 3 to 11 yrs


  • Read at least 20min a day, 5 days per week.
  • Place a sticker in your Reading Passport each day you read.
  • Come to the Library each week (total of six weeks) to have staff initial & date your Reading Passport.
  • Pick a prize from our Prize Poster!

FOR TEENS

ages 12 to 17 yrs


  • Read at least 30min a day, 5 days per week.
  • Fill out your reading record with the book title and author.
  • Come to the Library each week (total of six weeks) to submit a Raffle Ticket to enter a drawing for a $15 local food gift card.
  • In addition, once per week you can enter a book review for a book you finished that week to be entered to win a $25 local food gift card as well!

FOR ADULTS

18+


  • Read up to five books per week.
  • Come to the Library each week (total of six weeks) to enter each book you completed that week into a raffle.
  • Five winners are picked each Monday - one for a gift card to a local business, four to pick a prize from our selection of prizes!

Many of our August events have limited spaces available.

We have offered several of these programs in the past and they have been very popular. Please only register for the programs you are certain you can attend.

Krafty Kids!

Miss Julie is offering weekly Make-and-Take craft classes, running the week of July 8th through August 13th. Each week is a different theme, and children will get to make their choice of craft!


For ages 3 to 6 years: Tuesdays @ 1pm, Thursdays @ 11am

For ages 7 to 12 years: Tuesdays @ 3pm, Thursdays @ 1pm


Registration is required.


PLEASE NOTE: Children may attend both Tuesday & Thursday classes each week, but priority for Thursday's class will be given to children who did not attend Tuesday's class.

ESCAPE from Blackbeard's Cove!

Friday, August 2nd - three 'heats' at 6pm, 6:45pm, and 7:30pm

High adventures at sea have stranded you and your team of explorers on a deserted island! Work together to crack the codes and cyphers, find buried treasure, and unlock the secrets that will help you escape from Blackbeard's Cove - all before time runs out!


All attendees will receive a special prize, and the fastest teams in each heat will win a gift card to a Pleasant Valley business of their choice*!


The Rules & Other Important Info:

- For families and friend teams of 3 to 5 players.

- Open to ages 8 and up. All teams must have at least one member age 15 or older.

- There will be three "heats" - 6pm, 6:45pm, and 7:30pm. Each heat will consist of three teams. You may only sign up for one.

- Don't have a team of three but still want to play? Call the Library at 845-635-8460 - we will keep a list of singles and duos that are open to teaming up with others and do our best to match you up.

Ice Age Show w/ Nutty Scientists

Saturday, August 3rd @ 12:30pm

The kids will help the scientist overcome incredible challenges within the secret forest of Merlin the Wizard by performing amazing experiments. They will learn about the amazing properties of CO2 and dry ice getting to know about sublimation, chemical reactions, pressure, density, weight and osmosis.

This show is suitable for ages 5 and up.

Adventure Box Kids Craft! 4-6yrs

Monday, August 5th @ 1pm

Children can come design, create, and decorate their very own box for adventures! Their imagination is the limit for what these special boxes can do and be!

This class is for ages 4 to 6.

Adventures in Ballooning! w/ Kym & Scott

Monday, August 5th @ 6pm

If you've been to the Hudson Valley Balloon Festival or noticed colorful hot-air balloons high in our regional sky, you've likely seen "My Witch's Broom," the balloon owned by Pleasant Valley Library's own Kym Butler, and piloted by Scott Richards.


Join them for this special presentation, as they share their 15 years (and counting) of adventures in hot-air ballooning. They'll talk about the workings of a hot-air balloon, and what's involved in piloting; how a crew helps to set up and then "chase" the balloon; what balloon festivals are like; and how you can get involved in the adventures of hot-air ballooning!

Pirate Magic!

w/ Vince the Magician

We are excited to welcome back the Magic of Vince! Join him for a special Pirate Magic Show, sure to stun and amaze!

This show is suitable for ages 5 and up (and their families).

Interactive Movie Night:

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

Friday, August 9th @ 6pm

Don't just watch the movie, be a part of it! Join us for this fun after library hours audience-participation event!


Journey across the globe with archeologist Indiana Jones on his first adventure, to search for the powerful Ark of the Covenant, and recover it for the US government before the evil Nazis get to it first!


Dressing in costume is encouraged. We will provide the props, prompt sheets, & snacks!


*Please note that this film is rated PG by 1981 standards. Parental discretion is advised for bringing children to this program.


Registration is required. This program is for ages 10 and up. Children under the age of 13 must have an adult with them.

Teen Amazing Race

Saturday, August 10th - 12pm to 2pm

Calling all teens! Join us to "travel the world" Amazing Race-style! Bring your team or join one to face challenges like solving puzzles and making creative projects, while trying to be the first to finish and win the Grand Prize!


This program is for teens age 12-18/grades 7-12.

Line Dancing Party! w/ C&A Dance Party

Thursday, August 15th @ 6pm

Join us to welcome back Colleen and Aisha of C & A Dance Party for an interactive fun dance party introducing the basics of Country Line Dancing, that will have everyone boot scootin' and having a blast on the dance floor! Perfect for anyone who has never line danced before and those who are returning. This program is for ages 16+.

Summer Paint & Sip w/ Sarah

Saturday, August 17th @ 10:30am

Join local artist and senior library clerk Sarah as she guides you in creating a themed acrylic painting, while sipping seasonal "mocktails." No experience is needed, and all materials will be provided.


This program is open to all ages 13+.

End of Summer Celebration!

Friday, August 16th ~

3pm to 5pm


Stop by between 3pm and 5pm on Friday, August 16th to join us in celebrating the end of another great summer of reading!

BeeBee the Clown will be here to show us balloon animal twisting and magic tricks, we'll have fresh cotton candy, and you can pick up your NYS Summer Reading Certificate!

No registration is required - just stop by!

Not-So Wild Animal Stuffies

Friday, August 2nd @ 3pm -or- Monday, August 12th @ 1pm

IN PERSON REGISTRATION ONLY

Children ages 6 to 12 are welcome to come stuff their very own (not-so) wild animal stuffie! They will get to choose from several different stuffies, perform the Rainbow Wish Star Ceremony, write out an adoption certificate, and receive a gift bag to carry their new friend home in. We are offering three of these programs this summer - children may only attend ONE.


Registration is IN-PERSON ONLY, and will open at our Mid-Summer Registration Party on July 22nd @ 1pm.


This is a free program, but cancellations and/or no-shows with less than 24 hours notice will be charged the cost of the stuffed animal.

Kids Corner

Reading

Fur-iend Brianna!

Monday, August 5th - 1:30pm to 3pm

Brianna the Therapy Dog will be at the library to help children that are not comfortable reading out-loud in front of others (or being around dogs) feel more relaxed. She loves when kids who love animals come to read to her, even if they are already comfortable readers.

No registration required!

Kids Summer Art Show

To celebrate the excitement of summer as well as our reading theme, "Adventure Begins at Your Library!", we are asking kids to make a poster showing their favorite summer adventure! Whether it's a vacation you took last year, a trip coming up this summer, or a memorable venture in your own backyard - we want to showcase all the great experiences a summer adventure has given you!


The details:

  • open to ages 4 to 17 years
  • poster cannot exceed 12" by 18"
  • the subject must pertain to the "Adventure" theme
  • children may use whatever medium/mixed media they like, but it must be poster-based and able to be hung on the wall
  • children should legibly write their name and phone number on the BACK of their poster
  • all submissions are due by Friday, August 16th at our End of Summer Party
  • limit one submission per child



All submissions will be on display from August 19th through September 9th in our art gallery.

Make & Take Adult Craft

Senior Movie Morning Wednesday, August 14th @ 11:30am

Seniors (ages 50+) are invited to attend this special seniors-only movie matinee. Light refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring your own snack or lunch to enjoy! This month we will watch "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial", the story of Elliot, a young boy who discovers a friendly alien and, along with his little sister and family, helps ET escape from Earth and return to his home planet.
