High school students participated in a Clarke University Summer Scholarly Project with Joshua Moris.

Campus News

June and July have brought hundreds of fresh faces to campus through Clarke University Summer Camps and our unique Clarke University Summer Scholarly Projects. In addition, we have hosted several Dubuque community events with partners like the Dubuque Community School District, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Bluff Strokes Art Center, and other organizations. Registration is still open for boys’ and girls’ basketball and volleyball camps in July, so please let the young athletes in your life know.

Clarke is also collaborating with area colleges to host Dubuque College Visit Week July 29–August 2. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to tour five area schools and get to see all Dubuque has to offer. If you know any high school juniors or seniors who are considering college, encourage them to take advantage of this one-of-a-kind event.

Furthermore, the Clarke Board of Trustees held its meeting on campus June 20 and 21, during which we welcomed new members Michele Miller and Dr. Deborah Aston. We thank them and all our board members for their service!

Beyond discussions of reports regarding the Strategic Plan, the Capital Campaign, upcoming budgets, enrollment, academic affairs and student affairs, Executive Director of Admissions Ali Boyd and Director of Marketing Amy Errthum shared with the Board some of the new techniques we have adopted to navigate the ever-changing landscape of higher education.

Strategic Plan Update

The first goal of our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is “Live Our Mission and Values,” and a recent $50,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. will allow us to expand programming in this area via our “Clarke Character and Charism Project.” This multi-faceted initiative will enhance the integration of our Core Values–Freedom, Education, Charity, and Justice–across campus.

The grant also funded a part-time Chief Mission Officer position. We are pleased that Sr. Joan Mueller, OSF, will begin her work in this position next week. She will serve on the Mission and Core Values Committee and assist with implementing strategic planning initiatives that are tied to the first goal.

Additionally, we are redesigning the my.clarke.edu portal to make our intranet more user-friendly and responsive. This adapting and modernizing of technology is just one way in which we are meeting the objectives of goal 2: “Empower Student Success.”

Living our Legacy Spotlight

Joshua Moris, Instructor of Computer Science, is in this volume’s spotlight.

Living our legacy stems from our mission:

Clarke University is a Catholic academic community that believes learning is lifelong and life changing. We inspire intellectual curiosity, cultural engagement, professional preparedness, spiritual exploration, and a commitment to contributing to the common good in a global society.

Joshua’s dedication and enthusiasm are a hallmark of Clarke’s Computer Science program. He has brought innovative approaches to the curriculum, spurring intellectual curiosity and enhancing professional preparedness within our students. In addition, he consistently demonstrates his commitment to the common good with projects that promote community service and benefit area nonprofits like the Dubuque Regional Humane Society. Joshua also has shared his love of technology with future students through the Clarke University Summer Scholarly Projects program. Each year, Joshua invites local high school students to spend a week on campus designing, building, and testing their own virtual environments, including a new group of students just a few weeks ago.

Thank you, Joshua, for your contributions to Clarke’s community and impact!

Go Pride!
