Summer Camp Program

The 2014 Cheley Children's Hospital Summer Burn Camp starts today.
The journey to bring burn survivors together and build the staff and program into what it is today began 31 years ago and is nurtured and supported all year long.
Thank you for being a part of this community and all your support to make camp possible this year.

Thoughts from Andy Leighton

former counselor

inspired to become an Occupational Therapist by his experience at Burn Camp

The Wisdom of the Wagon Wheel:

The wagon wheel shows the scars of its past, but has no regrets about where it's been. Indeed, the signs of wear give it character.

The wagon wheel has miles to travel but no anxieties about where it's going or when it will get there.

The wagon wheel may get stuck in the mud and need a push along the way but does not avoid the journey because the road is muddy. The wagon wheel knows that it is the journey and not the destination that is most important. For when if finally gets where it's going, it will only sit and the wagon wheel would rather roll.

So don't let where you're going or where you've been overshadow the road you're on now. What defines us is how we approach each of its bumps and dips. There's no shame in needing a push when you're stuck in the mud but don't be content to sit still when there's so much road ahead..

Be like the wagon wheel and roll.

Words from the Staff

How does camp change your life?

"I want to be a part of Burn Camp, because it is a part of me.  It has changed my life experience from the 1st yr and every year since.  Each year I take home something new about myself and about the week."

Joy! Contrary to the ads Disney World is not the happiest place on earth. It's burn camp in the Rockies each summer. I find purpose, community and hope at camp. I try to allow full expression and exploration in the arts for every camper.

Welcome the 2014 Staff

Who is our staff?

As we learned in staff training, each person on our staff brings a unique set of gifts and perspective that works in harmony with the rest of the staff to create a place for every camper to belong.

Staff include:

Nurses

Occupational Therapist

Physical Therapist

Psychologists

Camp Professionals

Firefighters

Child Life Specialists

Artists

Hospital Liaisons

And when all these people come together with a common goal to build a place where burn survivors can grow and thrive, camp becomes a place where we all belong.

Words from the Staff

Why do you return to camp year after year?

"I am ALWAYS renewed by the strength, courage, tenacity, hope, love and determination which is demonstrated every day at camp. You see it in the eyes of each child as they experience camp."

"I love love love all that camp teaches.  I love the opportunity to see love, dedication, hard work and perseverence in action.  I hope to be an inspiration and a learner.  I strive to lead in a manner that encourages growth, and enjoys the moments to savor accomplishment for staff and campers alike."
