Celebrating Our History, Vision and Future

From the desk of the Executive Director, Alice E. Woods...

Ocean's Harbor House was in Washington DC for a national conference on ending homelessness. Ask yourself - how much do you really know about homelessness?

Recently, Ocean’s Harbor House staff attended the 2024 National Conference on Ending Homelessness in Washington, D.C. We joined over 2,000 people from around the country who serve the unhoused. The Conference and Capitol Hill Day brought together service providers, system leaders, advocates, and people with lived experience of homelessness to learn from each other, discuss best practices, and share new innovations in the field. The consensus throughout the multi-day event was that a community-wide coordinated approach to delivering services, housing and programs is needed to made an impact on this issue.

Homelessness has been on the rise since 2017, experiencing an overall increase of 6% nationally. In 2023, counts of homeless individuals reached record highs in the history of data collection. Unsheltered rates are also trending upward, impacting most racial, ethnic and gender subgroups. Homeless services systems continued to expand the availability of both temporary and permanent beds in 2023, but these resources still fall short of reaching everyone in need.

The only way to address homelessness is for communities to take a coordinated approach, moving from a collection of individual programs to a system-wide approach that is strategic and data driven. Here in Ocean County, Ocean’s Harbor House provides an integral part of this approach by offering a Transitional Living home for youth ages 16 to 22. We have been serving youth of this age in our Conifer Street location for over 20 years. Right now, at this moment, the house is full with young people who have created a new plan for their future. In the Spring of 2024, we hired a youth navigator, who is connecting more of our youth than ever to service linkages, career opportunities and housing options.

We are so proud about our place within the homeless response system here in Ocean County and cannot wait to open our Windsor Ave. location, adding to the great pool of resources our nonprofit community brings to those who are homeless. - Alice E Woods

The Schoenfeld Family:

A Giving Legacy since 1994

Bill Schoenfeld, (top)

Elaine, Ketti, Kenzie Schoenfeld (bottom, l-r)

Bill and Elaine Schoenfeld were first introduced to Ocean’s Harbor House by Don Bonica. Throughout Bill’s life, when he encountered someone who was battling with their own struggles, he was empathetic and tried to help them in a meaningful way. He was particularly moved when a young person was left vulnerable and needed help or guidance. When he learned about Ocean’s Harbor House, he saw an organization that was trying to right the wrongs of the innocent and vulnerable and joined the board to contribute to the mission. And as it often happens, with Bill you also benefit from Elaine’s insight and support, and so it was with Ocean’s Harbor House. When Bill resigned from the board, he let his daughter know it was her turn to make a difference and Ketti joined the board and 2 years later, Elaine officially joined. Elaine’s granddaughter Kenzie has volunteered as well for Ocean’s Harbor House making the Schoenfeld’s involvement in this mighty organization a multigenerational family affair.

Hello Ocean's Harbor House Community:

I wanted to take a moment to share with you why I am passionate about working here at Ocean's Harbor House. Throughout my career in human services, spanning nursing facilities, drug rehabilitation centers, and corrections, my driving force has always been to help people live their best lives.

Ocean's Harbor House holds a special place in my heart because it provides a vital transitional living program for vulnerable youth. It offers a safe and nurturing environment where young people can find stability, support, and the resources they need to transition into independent living successfully.

Every day, I am inspired by the resilience and determination of the youth we serve. Being part of this organization allows me to make a tangible difference in their lives, supporting them on their journey towards a brighter future.

Thank you for supporting Ocean's Harbor House and for being part of our community dedicated to empowering youth and creating positive change.

Warm regards,

Kenya Warren

Paul's Story

Since I have been at Oceans Harbor House, I have gotten a lot of things done that are going to set me up for life. Getting my finances in order to better provide for myself has been my focus. Since I have been in the program, I have managed to gain two jobs after successfully completing my junior year in high school. This was not the typical road I thought I would be on but being here for the majority of school year had its ups and downs. Passing all my classes and attending junior prom were definite highlights of the year. Staff was very helpful and encouraging during this process. Working as much as I can throughout the summer is my focus especially go into my senior year of high school. The program is going to help keep my focus with maintaining my grades, part time work schedule and playing on the hockey team. Of course, help me with time management, saving money, and being more responsible, which definitely wasn’t something that I was able to do or think about before coming here.

When I came to the Transitional Living Program, my mental health was not at all in good shape. Through talking to people, starting to get things done, and having things to look forward to, all with the help of the house (staff), I feel like things have become normal again. So, they were able to get me back to a normal mental state and start really beginning my life as an healthier adult which is what the whole program is about.

KP's Story

I would like to take my time to introduce myself. I go by KP. I was brought into Oceans Harbor House in February 2023. It all started off when I was in the shelter. I was extremely nervous and scared when I first was brought into the environment. During the 6 months of me being in the shelter I have gained so much knowledge and comfort from the staff there. It was very hard at first being so far away from family, but I got up and motivated myself to get a job and look at the bigger picture. At the shelter I was taught cooking skills, different ways to handle stress/ anxiety, and basic hygiene needs. I had worked with a counselor that I had become very close with who has helped me extremely.

Later that year in May 2023 1 got accepted into the transitional living program of Ocean's Harbor House, it was a great opportunity for me to focus on myself and what I wanted to gain not only out of the program, but for myself. I have been in STLP for about a year and two months now. My overall experience here has been good. The staff and team of STLP have helped me tremendously, making me feel great about myself. Being here you are able to make connections with different people and relate to experiences you've been through.

Being here has taught me a lot of independence and given me resources on housing, saving, life skills, healthy habits, etc. STLP is a good environment for anyone who is the age of 16-21 looking for independence and resources for living on your own. I want to say thank you to the staff and faculty for assisting me and pushing me to become a better individual.
