Our beloved National Sales Manager and friend Alice Masotes passed away on April 30. In her 25 years working with Herbalist & Alchemist, she traveled countless miles, bringing her smile and joy to many. Alice was passionate about herbs and our products. She loved people, and people loved her. I know many of you who met her over the years will share that same sense of loss of a valued friend. | David and I and all of us here at H&A could always count on her. Over the years we remember her throwing her roaring fast softball in the company parking lot, bringing her sweet dog Lulu up for a visit, contributing to our weekly marketing or management meetings or just sharing a meal on the road at the end of a long trade show or conference day. She was smart, and she was the kindest and sweetest person. We will miss her. |
We’ve all re-read her “David’s Students – Where Are They Now” interview from a previous newsletter, and thought you might want to, as well.

Herb Day 2024 at Well Sweep Farm
In May, Herbalist & Alchemist sponsored the annual American Herbalists Guild of NJ (AHG) event at Well Sweep Farms in Port Murray, NJ. The event, which is always on the first Saturday in May, was well received with over 1,475 people attending. David Winston, Beth Lambert, Karen Tuorto, and Nicole Smith were in the H&A booth meeting hundreds of people. Many of our employees attended with their families.
David gave his “Walk on The Wild Side” lecture and herb walk twice, and his “Stories of Plants & Magic” lecture and herb walk.
Well-known herbalists gave free lectures on everything from Nature’s Wild Apothecary to Shatavari, Maca & Energetics. There were tours of the spectacular gardens, raffle drawings, vendors, food trucks and music.
H&A had a raffle for each hour of the event and a Grand Prize basket of goodies at the end of the day. Congratulations to our winners Jane L, Vidya H, Elisa B, Andrea G, Becky K and Shelbie W. It is always exciting to meet with our customers and put faces to the voices we speak with each day. The day was cool and cloudy, but we all had a wonderful time.

Medicines from the Earth 2024 Conference
Of all the herbalist events throughout the year, Medicines from the Earth is special. David reports:
"This year’s MFTE conference was like a homecoming. Back at the long-time location of the Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC, close to 400 people came together to learn, celebrate plants, enjoy each other’s company, and simply have a wonderful time. I taught my usual 4-hour Field Study, as well as Medicines from the Southern Forest and Fields and It Hurts to Move, Botanical and Nutritional Treatment of Back Pain and Fibromyalgia."
| | "I was joined by Jill Stansbury, ND, Mary Bove, ND, Donald Lance, Doug and Todd Elliot, Lucretia Van Dyke, Kat Maier, 7Song, Marc Williams, and many other well-respected and amazing teachers. The weather was a bit iffy, but during my field study Friday from 10:00-3:00, when we stopped for lunch at 12:00 it drizzled for a half hour, then stopped in time for us the resume class outdoors. We ended at 3:00 and 15 minutes later it rained. The plant spirits were looking out for us that day!" |
Mary Lou Thackeray, H&A Sales Representative, also shared her reflections:
"Medicines from the Earth in North Carolina draws such a great group of people. It is mostly women, and a lot of people looking for the next step after a career in nursing, retail, mothering, etc. David hit it right-on when he said herbal studies or practice is something you can do in the retirement stage of your life. There were also clinical herbalists, Naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists, retailers, and students."
"Our booth was very busy the whole time! People were particularly interested in Daily Adapt and Serenity Compound, solid extracts, bitters, and respiratory products."

What is an Alterative? Find out in this informative Blog...
The concept and belief in the benefit of alterative substances was common in both orthodox medical practice and sectarian medicine throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. By the 1940’s, the use of this term and the use of alterative agents had, for the most part, disappeared from orthodox medical practice, although Herbalists and Naturopathic physicians continued to use these substances as an important part of their therapeutic regimens.
