Summary of Sanibel City Council Meeting October 3, 2022
FY 2023 Budget. The City Council voted to approve Resolution 22-051 the budget for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2022 and ending September 30, 2023 (FY23 budget.)
The final approved FY23 budget totals $84,029,407, which includes the general fund, all special revenue funds, all capital project funds, the enterprise funds, interfund transfers, all reserves and the beginning fund balances.
Maximum operating millage rate for FY 2023 – The City Council voted to approve Resolution 22-050 adopting the final operating and voted debt service ad valorem millage rates for tax year 2022 for the City of Sanibel. The operating millage rate for FY 2023 is 1.9750 mills.
Committed fund balances for disaster reserve and environmental initiative reserve. The City Council voted to approve Resolution 22-052 establishing committed fund balances for disaster reserve ($4,500,000.00) and environmental initiative reserve ($1,000,000.00) for the City of Sanibel.
Municipal Police Officers' Retirement Trust Fund. The City Council voted to approve Resolution 22-053 pertaining to the Sanibel Board of Trustees of the Municipal Police Officers' Retirement Trust Fund ratifying Matt Casola and Christofer Chiappy to serve on the Sanibel Police Pension Board as the two trustees elected by the Police Officers employed by the City who participate in the plan. The term of service shall be October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2026.
Upon adjournment of the City Council meeting, Lee County Commissioner Kevin Ruane provided a concise update about the official response from Lee County Emergency Operations.
Additionally, Congressman Byron Donalds provided information about federal assistance available to residents. Specifically, he noted “Operation Blue Roof” is operational for Lee County.
Operation Blue Roof is a priority mission managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The purpose of Operation Blue Roof is to provide homeowners and permanently occupied rental properties in disaster areas with fiber-reinforced sheeting to cover their damaged roofs until arrangements can be made for permanent repairs. This is a free service to homeowners. Operation Blue Roof protects property, reduces temporary housing costs, and allows residents to remain in their homes while recovering from the storm. Congressman Donalds offered assistance to constituents through his district office after the initial registration process is complete.
