Eating Disorders in the News

darryl robertsLate Breaking News!  America the Beautiful:  Health for Sale  is undergoing some unplanned revisions because of a recent visit to Washington DC by the filmmaker, Darryl Roberts

In a recent telephone conversation with Darryl he said he recently got a call from the White House which resulted in a unplanned trip to DC to meet with top policy makers.  Filled with hopeful anticipation as the meetings began, his high spirits turned to shock and disillusionment as the interviews unfolded.  Although the film was "finished" before the trip, upon his return to Chicago Darryl began a new set of revisions to insert the interviews.  He shared with us that attendees will not want to miss the Saturday night Red Carpet Premiere at iaedp Symposium 2011.  Preceding the film premiere, Darryl will be at the Artists' Reception to meet and chat with the professionals in attendance!

Pediatrics.org Feb 2011

WHAT'S KNOWN ON THIS SUBJECT: Long-term pediatric weight management studies have been predominantly carried out with affluent, white populations. Thus, evidence on successful management of childhood obesity is limited, especially in innercity, ethnically diverse populations.

WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS: This randomized controlled trial bridges the gap in the pediatric obesity treatment literature by revealing a sustained treatment effect on anthropometric and metabolic markers after a family-based lifestyle intervention versus traditional clinical care in inner-city, ethnically diverse population.

CHICAGO (AP) -- YouTube videos on cutting and other self-injury methods are an alarming new trend, attract millions of hits and could serve as a how-to for troubled viewers, a study warns.  Many videos show bloody live enactments or graphic photos of people cutting their arms or legs with razors or other sharp objects, the study found. Many also glamorize self-injury and few videos discourage it, the study authors said.  Read the full story
