Spotlight: Student Basic Needs

Student access to basic necessities is essential to creating a supportive and thriving college environment. Basic needs insecurity among college students is a growing concern for institutions of higher education (IHEs). Basic needs insecurity is not limited to unmet food and housing needs; it also includes access to mental and physical healthcare, transportation, childcare, dependent care, technology, and personal hygiene care such as menstrual products. Estimates on the scope of basic needs insecurity among college students varies widely, from 10 to 75 percent; however, a national survey by the Temple University’s Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice found that nearly three in five college students experienced basic needs insecurity and many students did not know about the supportive services available to them, such as emergency aid.

These findings highlight the need for IHEs to provide support to students with unmet basic needs, as well as increase awareness about the services available on and off campus. Explore strategies to identify and support students with unmet basic needs on your campus by visiting the resources below.
