Dear Student Affairs Supervisors,

As promised, and as Dr. Buchanan shared in her email, your voices and feedback were heard. As your Student Affairs Staff Coaching and Professional Development Team, Jana McCarthy and I have worked hard to honor your feedback and requests for more training, development, and tools to better equip and empower you as supervisors. We heard that to continue to keep student’s well-being and their success at the forefront, you need to feel supported, empowered, and equipped within a culture founded on empathy and inspiration.

The addition of our new values of Courage, Compassion, Joy, and Yes gave us an opportunity to reboot and redefine what it means to be a Student Affairs staff member. In this linked video, Jana and Jose Resendez, two members of the original Student Affairs Culture & New Employee Strike Team, go deeper into the work that led us up to where we are today.

To jumpstart our culture reboot, the Student Affairs Professional Development Team will be providing training to all Student Affairs team members over the coming months and academic year. This training will provide details and insight into how we as Student Affairs colleagues can live into our values, support one another, and love our students to success.

Timeline & Next Steps:

We will start with our frontline leaders and supervisors. This includes all Student Affairs employees who supervise staff, hourlies, and/or student workers. These frontline leaders and supervisors will be invited to participate in a two-day required training this fall. All other Student Affairs staff will receive training in Spring 2025 before we launch our New Employee Onboarding experience for all new staff in Fall 2025. All Student Affairs employees - including Dr. Buchanan - are required to participate in this culture reboot training over the next year.

There will be six different opportunities to attend the two-day training & culture reboot for frontline leaders and supervisors throughout the fall semester. Please sign up for the option that works best with your schedule. All trainings are offered in a Thursday/Friday format from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and you must attend both days within a training block to receive credit for attendance. Trainings will be limited to 25 or 32 participants per block (depending on location). While we made every attempt to spread the training locations across all regions, we were limited in some situations by space accessibility based on our needs.  See below for the training schedule and links to sign up.

As we get closer to Spring 2025, more details will follow regarding the Student Affairs Staff Culture Reboot Training that your staff will be required to attend. In the meantime, feel free to share this email with them so that they are well-informed.

To borrow Dr. Buchanan’s words, it will take time and effort from each of us as professionals and colleagues to continue to redefine the culture we want and we must continue to reinforce it as we move into the future as a division.

Thank you all for your time and investment into this Student Affairs culture reboot. We look forward to engaging with each of you throughout the Fall. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to at saprofdev@austincc.edu

Sincerely,
