After months of speculation and rumors - IT'S OFFICIAL!  My partner, Shane Widner, signed a long-term contract this past Friday at 5pm for the adjacent BakeHouse restaurant, which will be undergoing an extensive remodeling and conversion to our new 24-hour caf concept!  Shane wanted me to personally thank all of those who made this possible, including our partners/investors, and Carl Zapffe, owner/operator of the BakeHouse for the past 33-years, who worked tirelessly with Shane to make for a smooth closing.  After 33-years of operating the BakeHouse, Carl is ready to retire, and who better to pass the torch to than his neighbors at Strange Brew?

We have been close friends and neighbors with the BakeHouse since we first opened and we are gratified and honored to carry on the fine tradition of friendly, neighborhood service with our new 24-hour caf featuring a terrific menu with the same low prices that made the BakeHouse a local favorite for over three decades.   The BakeHouse will continue operations through June 15th (Fathers Day), after which time we will start with our planned renovation of the facility.

To date, we've raised over 75% of our $1MM Offering, which started in
mid-April.  We are now in the home stretch, so if you would like to receive
a copy of our Business Plan, please let me know by emailing me at
Info@StrangeBrewAustin.com and I will put you in touch with my partner Shane.

Our New Sound System! Most of it actually isn't new, but improved! I wasn't how we could actually improve the sound since it was fantastic already, but with a few tweaks to the position and angle of our existing speakers and the change from two small center speakers to a single, larger speaker..... I was blown away, the room sounds even warmer and the consistency of the coverage is far better. As I listened to the first show with the new setup, I closed my eyes and felt like I was listening to a well produced CD in my living room on a high end stereo..... I was amazed by the difference.

The Paul and Paul Tribute concert was a huge hit and the music was absolutely wonderful, Charlie Faye and the all-star cast of band members and singers did a fantastic job!

I would like to apologize for the larger than normal crowd and the incorrect set time that was advertised. The placed was packed and it was less than ideal. I failed to consider the 20 singers and their guest when I set the capacity of the show. In addition there was some miscommunication between the band and myself in regards to the set time. I did send an email to the folks that purchased tickets as soon as I was aware of the incorrect time. I apologize for any inconvenience this caused. Rest assured, I will make sure it doesn't happen again..... With that, Charlie and I are already planning a date for another amazing tribute! I will keep you posted.

Strings Attached will perform the songs of Stevie Wonder this Friday at 8pm. If you have never been to a Strings Attached show. this one will be a good one to discover the brilliance that is Will Taylor, the band's leader. Lisa Tingle will be the lead vocalist for this event. Tickets are still available for this event and you can get them here.

Steve Forbert will be here this Saturday June 7th at 7pm. You may remember Steve as he had some pretty big hits in the 70's but he is best known for his song Romeo's Song. Steve has continued writing great songs and this is sure to be a special event. Tickets are still available and you can get them here.

Matt the Electrician

Matt the Electrician crafts sharp narratives with equal measures heart and home. Evidence: It's a Beacon, It's a Bell. The longtime Austin resident's excellent new album showcases a seasoned songwriter in top form. "Look out the window at the road rushing by," he sings on the stunning "Muddy Waters." "The shatterproof glass breaking up in your eyes/Your own private movie when things fall apart/Everyone's trying to break your heart." Details whittled from real experience frequently fortify his songs.

"Muddy Waters" backs the claim. Matt dreamed up the song as he drove around Austin with his 12-year-old daughter after a big storm. Water under the Lamar Bridge was brown and green, colors he thought an interesting mix. "Yeah, it's dirty, Dad," his daughter said, unimpressed. "Muddy Waters" deftly charts our decidedly varying perceptions at different times in our lives and with age comes an acute awareness that everything moves in cycles. Listen closely. Lessons quickly emerge within the song's ebb and flow...

Dustin Prinz
Thursday 6/5 at 10pm ($5)

Dustin Prinz is an extremely prolific songwriter with a powerful vocal and a unique guitar style that has jaws dropping and feet tapping around the globe.
Dustin was born in West Point Nebraska on January 1st, 1983. Growing up in such a rural environment made him a rather curious fellow with a yearning to experience life to the fullest.
Dustin's guitar playing incorporates his unique percussive technique with intricate flat picking and his signature style blending hybrid picking with a Paradiddle percussive style developed during his days as a drummer, Dustin calls this style - Para-Pickin'.
At a time when music industry folks and music lovers seem to be wrestling with issues from how best to utilize the internet to discovering that next big thing, Dustin Prinz is slipping in under the fence with a unique style that is connecting with millions of loyal fans around the world.
Dustin's Live performance is an eclectic mix of amazing guitar playing mixed with impressive song writing and a stage persona that dares an audience not to be dragged in personally and emotionally by the experience. A typical Dustin Prinz performance takes an audience on a roller coaster of emotions from laughter to despair and all points in between.
Dustin's impressive musicianship has garnered the attention of respected and credible companies such as, Dean Markley, Cort Guitars and ULTRASOUND amps with which he has product endorsement deals.
If you are a lover of music and you enjoy discovering that new artist or seeing a talented singer/songwriter perform, you owe it to yourself to check out Dustin Prinz...

Will Taylor
When International Touring Grammy Winning Artists like Pearl Jam, Eddy Vedder, P Diddy and others come to Austin, they call this man for their String Needs.

Alicia Keys discovered Gary Clark Jr. through a Strings Attached live video performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from their huge White Album show of 2006.

For the past decade, Will Taylor's group Strings Attached has made a name for itself by reworking iconic music like the Beatles 'White album', Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Rubber Soul as well as the hits of Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Jimi Hendrix-adding jazz and roots flavors along with string arrangements to lovingly assembled acoustic renditions.

Their performances in churches and sanctuaries are akin to a religious experience for fans.

Wendy Colonna
Saturday 6/7 at 3pm ($10)
Wendy Colonna

Wendy Colonna is a Louisiana girl with a blend of Cajun and Italian ancestry; a perfectly sexy combo that translates well in her music. A young woman who has decidedly come into her own, the dark-eyed Colonna fills her musical space with a throaty voice, deep-down retro roots and soul.

Colonna admits that the path of a musician isn't always the easiest, but she can't imagine chucking her dream. "I do this work because it calls to me; I have learned that what I'm doing has a powerful effect on people's lives; it heals and transforms. So I just keep doing it. After all, isn't persistence and perseverance necessary in all forms of love?"

Having grown up in Southwest Louisiana in a working class home, Colonna's self confidence has not always come easy, even if she makes it look that way. "Life is full of hard knocks," she realizes. "As long as I'm in touch with my roots, my family, my friends and source, all is possible." Indeed, Colonna's seriously strong pipes and songwriting prove that age does foster wisdom and practice does, indeed, make perfect. "My writing is influenced most by songwriters who's work is so nerve-strikingly personal and universally accessible. . . Jackson Browne, Carole King, Marvin Gaye, Randy Newman, Willie Dixon, Leonard Cohen, Ray LaMontagne and countless others. They touch your soul and let you bring your own stories and characters to the music. . . That's what I aspire to in writing melodies and lyrics and working with grooves."

Lew Card
"Low Country Hi-Fi" LP Release
Saturday 6/7 at 5pm (FREE)
Lew Card is an expert in the grace that comes from a song constructed at a slow and steady pace. "Nothin' to it but to do it," the Chattanooga transplant says of his full-length solo debut, Low Country Hi-Fi, a rustic, refined collection nine songs born without a true timestamp. "This is something that, 30 years down the road, you can pop it in and it'll be the same thing."

The Austinite has branched out from the bands he has led since relocating from Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 2002. His music is "jug band meets county blues." A style that harkens back to when he first started writing at age 12.

"I've written hundreds of songs," he says. "Being in bands for so long, I saw the process of what was working and what wasn't working and wanted to try my own hand."

That means fewer banjos, more guitar leads and small, skin-run drum kits. "I think there are only six or eight cymbal crashes on the whole record," Card reveals. "Less is more." It's all rustic, but without a cheap feel, refined but without too much polish.

Steve Forbert
Saturday 6/7 at 7pm
SEATED Tickets $20 Day of Show $25
STANDING Tickets $12 Day of Show $15

Steve Forbert's 1978 debut album proclaimed the singer-songwriter Alive on Arrival and indeed, the artist made a strong impression with a set of personal, sometimes gentle, musical reflections on life and love. Forbert departed Mississippi for New York City in the mid-seventies and managed to carve out a niche in the vibrant club scene of the day, playing famous venues like Gerde's Folk City and even CBGB's. That heady period was captured on Alive on Arrival and on Forbert's 1979 follow-up, Jackrabbit Slim.

Rolling Stone contributing editor, David Wild, recently wrote that "now or then, you would be hard-pressed to find a debut effort that was simultaneously as fresh and accomplished as Alive on Arrival . . . it was like a great first novel by a young author who somehow managed to split the difference between Mark Twain and J.D. Salinger."

Producer, John Simon, renowned for his collaborations with The Band and Leonard Cohen, shepherded Forbert's second release, Jackrabbit Slim, to success. Forbert credits Simon with helping him nail "Romeo's Tune" for the Nashville-recorded album, and the song became the artist's only Top 20 U.S. hit. (It peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.)

Though further chart success has eluded Steve Forbert, he's continued to write particularly insightful songs and has grown an impressive legacy. His most recent studio album was 2012's Over with You. He's received a Grammy nomination, seen his songs performed by Keith Urban, Rosanne Cash and Marty Stuart, and even appeared opposite Cyndi Lauper in her music video for "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." Forbert continues to tour, both solo and with his band, and has a string of upcoming dates scheduled both in the United States and abroad. Tickets are still available and you can get them here.

Scrappy Jud Newcomb
Saturday 6/7 at 9pm ($10)
Scrappy Jud Newcomb

Born in Mississippi, "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb got his start in Austin as Stonesian guitarist for relocated roots rockers the Loose Diamonds (1989-1995), fronted by another respected local musician, Troy Campbell. After the band's breakup, Newcomb became one of the capital's most sought-after sideman, settling in for a long, weekly, "hippie hour" residency with local blues chanteuse Toni Price (1992-1999). Producing a succession of critically praised LPs for Beaver Nelson (The Last Hurrah, Little Brother, Undisturbed), as well as Walter Tragert's comeback (Lousy With Desire), he finally made time for to his own solo debut in 2003, Turbinado, on local imprint Freedom Records. Byzantine, considered the superior release, followed two years later. Newcomb can be seen Thursday nights at the Lucky Lounge with (Small) Faces' keyboardist Ian McLagan, and at the Saxon Pub's Sunday night song swaps with the Resentments, both long-running weekly gigs that help lay claim to Austin's status as the live music capital of the world. - Melanie Haupt

Jimmy & The Mustangs
Saturday 6/7 at 11pm ($5)

Jimmy and the Mustangs is an American rockabilly band fronted by Jimmy Haddox (sometimes credited as Jimmy Silvers). Emerging from the Punk Scene in Southern California during the 1980s, Jimmy and the Mustangs played their first live show to a sold-out audience opening for the renowned all-girl band, The Go-Go's. At the time, the band's "root's music" was fueled by fury-driven, gut-wrenching guitars, not unlike their punk contenders of that era. As the band progressed, a more definitive sound began to evolve, and Jimmy and the Mustangs carved out a style of rockabilly and swing unlike any other band in Los Angeles at the time. World-famous Hollywood Nightclubs like The Whiskey, The Roxy and The Starwood began booking Jimmy and the Mustangs as an opening act for L.A. bands such as X, The Blasters and Los Lobos as well as touring bands such as Chuck Berry, The Stray Cats and Joe Ely, just to name a few. It wasn't long before Jimmy and the Mustangs were headlining the same clubs with sold-out shows of their own.
In a 1982 Los Angeles Times review of their sold-out Roxy show "filled with quiff-headed rocking cats and their petticoated kittens", the group was described as "not just a band. The Roxy show featured a full-scale production number, complete with guest musicians, guest singers" and others.[1]
Not long after being hired by Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame to perform at his own private party, the band was sought out by Bruce Springsteen, who joined them onstage. An East Coast Tour followed. Upon returning home to L.A., the band received its first record deal with Vanity Records, which sold an excess of 40,000 copies. Television and Movie appearances followed. A self-titled E.P. was released on the Curb/MCA label and included the song "Justine", which was made into a video and received play on MTV (back when it was cool). Since relocating to Austin Texas, Jimmy has recorded a self-titled CD and has put together a new Mustangs line-up.

She has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame alongside such legends as Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt and Nanci Griffith and is an ongoing winner of the Austin Chronicle's various music awards, as well as Folk Alliance awards for Best Artist, Best Songwriter and Record of the Year.
Her 2005 album Land of Milk and Honey was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The song has become a standard in choir repertory the world over. Two of her songs appeared on Joan Baez' Grammy-nominated record, Day After Tomorrow.
In addition to touring in support of the highly acclaimed Roses at the End of Time, Eliza and her son, producer Cisco Ryder, are hard at work on a new album, The Nocturne Diaries, scheduled for release on March 18, 2014.

From Blind Lemon Jefferson to T-Bone Walker and Charlie Christian, to Eric Johnson, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, the Lone Star State has always been a hot bed of string-bending guitar wizards. Though he is far too self-effacing to ever put himself in such august company, John Inmon fits seamlessly into that six-string continuum. His peers know John as one of the finest guitarists in Austin, Texas (and, considering the competition, that is high praise indeed); his fans know him as the signature guitar style that has, at one time or another, propelled the music of Townes van Zandt, Jimmy LaFave, Eliza Gilkyson,  Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Delbert Mcclinton, Marcia Ball, Omar and the Howlers, the Lost Gonzo Band, Bruce Robison, Pat Green, Michael Martin Murphy, Keith Sykes, Larry Joe Taylor, Rusty Weir, Bobby Bridger and many more. As winner of the Texas Music Awards Producer if the Year in April 2012, John has become known as a first rate producer, producing CD's for a number of artists nationwide. "I've been making records since the 60's, so I know how to make records and I believe it's my duty to pass along some of what I've learned to new artists. Plus, I get a kick out of it- it's what I do"

Chris Gage & Friends 6PM - 7:30PM ($6)

Nobody puts Chris Gage in a box.

Acoustic, electric, baritone, slide and lap steel guitar, mandolin, organ, piano and vocals - the studio ace has mastered them all. He's been a sideman to Jerry Jeff Walker, Roy Clark and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He's gigged in the Soviet Union and the Royal Albert Hall. He's played on the television programs of three "Tonight Show" hosts - Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien.

And once a week, for roughly the past 15 years, he's sat down at a piano in the neighborhood joint Donn's Depot to play a mix of covers and originals, with special guests ranging from Troupe Gammage of local pop outfit Speak to Carrie Rodriguez to wife and musical partner Christine Albert.

Though Gage shines all on his own, his voice crackling with just the right emotional intensity on a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," he also - ever the gentleman - heaps praise on everyone who comes by, from guest musicians to an older couple in the audience dancing the night away.

And before he packs it in for the night, he takes a shot at "Linus and Lucy," Vince Guaraldi's famed piano theme to "Peanuts." "This is kind of my sobriety test at the end of the night," chuckles Gage.

He has also performed and/or recorded with such noteworthy artists as Lyle Lovett, Joan Osborne, Emmylou Harris, Ben Kweller, Little Feet, Elvis Costello, Susan Tedeschi, Gillian Welch, and Alejandro Escovedo.

"Hood has style to burn, with a knack for composing songs as ageless as they are pleasing to hear." - Margaret Moser, The Austin Chronicle

The Warren Hood Band features Austin guitar ace Willie Pipkin, and singer and pianist, Emily Gimble. Gimble is the granddaughter of Grammy Award winning fiddler Johnny Gimble, who was a member of the original Texas Playboys. Emily has also gained notoriety for her role as lead singer and pianist of theMarshall Ford Swing Band. She has shared the stage with such greats as Ray Benson, Marcia Ball, Bobby Bare and Willie Nelson.

"Emily Gimble ... sings with an amazing, free, effortless style. She sounds a little bit like Norah Jones and Billie Holliday, but it as not as mannered or stuffy as other female singers ... What I like about Emily is that she is totally unaffected, and the music just pours out of her, like it floats up out of her body, like an essential part of her."

- Elana James.

The self-titled debut album, The Warren Hood Band, was brilliantly produced by Charlie Sexton and 9 of the 11 songs were written/co-written by Warren, including the album's single "Alright" and the rockin', soulful "Where Have You Gone", phenomenally sung by Emily Gimble.
