What Being a Seawolf Support Means: Get to Know Our Resources

Greetings, Seawolf Families!

We are extremely excited to welcome your student to campus for another academic year! While we still have a few weeks to prepare, we understand whether your student is returning, or just beginning their time at Stony Brook, there can be many emotions around back-to-school season.

Maybe you're nervous about your student finding their place on campus; if they will adjust to their coursework, or it could be as simple as where they go if they are feeling under the weather.

Whatever you're feeling, know that you have a large team of your own supporters right here in the Division of Student Affairs.

We sat down with the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Rick Gatteau, to share more insight on how the Division of Student Affairs (DOSA) can help your student succeed and how it can help support you too!

The Division of Student Affairs is an extensive team. How do we serve our Seawolves?

Gatteau: The Division of Student Affairs is a student-centered team of more than 270 professional staff. Collectively, we focus on the success of each student by providing programs and services that enrich their Seawolf experience. Most students are in classes for about 18 hours a week, so we play a critical role during the time students are not in class, helping them engage with their peers, develop their identity, gain experience, and define and achieve their goals. That is the heart of what we do in Student Affairs.

Stony Brook University announced its new university brand this summer as “Dare to Be.” What does that phrase mean for DOSA, our Seawolves, and our families?

“Dare to Be” reflects the exciting momentum happening at Stony Brook. It feels big. It’s inspirational. It’s about setting a goal and working to achieve that goal. Each day, we ask students, “Who do you want to be?” Our job is to help students find their passion, encourage their curiosity and creativity, and become their best selves.

We understand this year may come with challenges. How will DOSA act as a resource for our Seawolf Supporters in addition to our students?

Our Seawolf families are partners because they care and want to support their student’s growth, development, and success. We will continue to communicate important information to parents and families, and we encourage families to maintain communication with their students. Ask questions, ask how they’re doing, and recommend they utilize campus resources. At the end of the day, we want to help our students become more self-sufficient and their own best advocates, and coaching and communication are important to help achieve those goals.

We know there will be challenges on many college campuses this fall because we live in a world with a lot of challenges and conflicts. At Stony Brook, we value civility and respect. We embrace differences in our community, including differences of opinion, and we want our diverse student body to be engaged and think critically about issues. That’s an integral part of the college experience.

It’s also important that we respect the rights of others, even when we may disagree with their views. We expect students to follow the rules and policies that are in place to ensure our community is a safe environment for all. We encourage parents and families to engage with their students around these values and expectations.

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

Salt shaker

Welcome to the fall semester at Stony Brook University! We are excited to meet some of our new family members and happy to connect with our continuing families. You are ALL members of our Seawolf community.

As students begin their journey at Stony Brook, they sometimes find it difficult to find their circle of friends and their family members may worry about a lack of opportunities for them to get involved. Rest assured! We have plenty of spaces and places for students to connect, meet new friends, and find their sense of belonging. We take pride in the fun and creative ways we bring our students together to explore meeting new people and building connections. Our Student Engagement and Activities team works to provide engaging events and memorable traditions while overseeing our over 400 clubs and organizations

We also have the Student Support Team Peer Interns who can assist students who may be a bit apprehensive about taking the first steps in engaging on campus. The interns are a friendly group of undergraduate students who are here to make other students feel comfortable and build some confidence in ways to find their sense of belonging on campus. They are happy to meet with new students for a cup of coffee or a walk across campus to talk through the transition to college and fun ways to get involved.

While family members may worry that extracurricular activities and time with friends can take students away from the academic rigor that is required to be a successful student, these experiences will help them feel more connected and at peace. We all understand that a stressful day can be made a bit lighter when we have a friend to talk with. Take a few minutes to ask your student if they plan to be involved outside the classroom with any clubs or activities. Sprinkle them with support as they embark on these additional paths in meeting new people and exploring experiences on campus. Remember, these connections can provide mentorship, build confidence, and expand their sense of belonging as a Seawolf!

Get to the Finish Line With U-RISE

Meet the U-RISE Finish Line team! U-Rise Finish Line will offer advice to help you best support your students through their academic journey to a successful graduation.

As a new year begins, it's a great time for students to build a relationship with their academic advisor.

Your student's academic advisor is a connection to resources on campus to get them to the right people at the right time. Encourage your student to explore the Find Your Advisor tool for contact information for their academic advisor.

Upcoming Academic Calendar Dates/Deadlines: Retaking Courses

We understand sometimes things don’t go as expected when a student is taking a course, that's why we have a course retake policy in place to support students. Continuing students who may need to retake a course should know the retake enrollment time is approaching!

Questions to ask your student about a course retake:

  • Are you planning to retake any courses this semester?
  • Have you talked to your academic advisor about this?
  • How will a course retake affect your GPA or credit count?

Have Questions? We Have Answers!

What day and time should we arrive on campus to move-in our student?

Move-in dates and times will vary depending on the student demographic (first-years, transfers, returning, international or special programs students). Students will need to select a move-in date time slot by August 7 through their housing portal. For more information, visit the Campus Residences website.

Does my student need a permit to park on campus?

For the 2024-2025 academic year, there is a new tiered parking permit model for students that includes both pay and no-pay options. Commuter parking permits will now have three tiers (Commuter Core, Commuter Perimeter, and Commuter Satellite). There will also be two-tiered residential parking permits (Perimeter and Satellite) for students. To learn more about the different tiers and how to register, click here.
