Family Connect - Your connection to the University

The Beginning of Your Seawolf's Path Towards Excellence:

Learn More About Advising at

Stony Brook University

Greetings, Seawolf Families!

We are just a few weeks away from the start of another academic school year! While you and your student might be excited for this next step, it's also normal to be nervous about starting classes and even finding your passion here at Stony Brook University. Just remember, there is always someone to help guide your student!

Advising for first-year undergraduate students is specifically designed to set them up for success as new university students. Advisors pay special attention to the needs of each individual student, helping guide them on their own path to intellectual excellence and academic success.

Our advising offices seek to empower students to discover their academic goals, engage in learning opportunities and connect to the various and vast array of services offered on campus for academic and personal growth.

Whether your student is a first year, transfer or returning, make sure they schedule a visit with their advisor early, and at least once a semester.

Tips from Students

How can your Seawolf find their passion at SBU?

We hear from Lamia Khan, a junior majoring in Sociology with a minor in Health, Medicine and Society, who speaks about her experience transferring to SBU and going beyond her comfort zone to find the path that will set her up for success after graduation.

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

Salt shaker

When our students begin their journey at Stony Brook University, they have academic dreams and goals that they plan for with the hopes of a timely graduation and a successful career path.  As family members, we want our students to be prepared with their academic roadmap to ensure they meet all degree requirements and graduate on time! While the responsibilities related to the implementation of their plan lies with them, we can offer them some easy, supportive guidance along the way.

At Stony Brook University, there are many resources available to assist students with their academic planning and our job as family members is to gently remind our students to connect with these resources each semester. All communications related to enrollment dates and deadlines will be sent to their SBU email account, so you can assist them in understanding that they need to check that email at least once a day and to schedule appointments with advisors well before their expected enrollment appointment.

Sometimes an intended academic plan may shift and change as your student takes the time to explore some of the many options that are available to them here at SBU. Remember that your student is taking the lead on this journey and we are here to support them with a sprinkling of love and encouragement along the way!

Career and Internships

Get Ready for the Fall 2023

Job and Internship Fair

As the new semester begins, your student might wonder, 'How can I find a job or an internship?'

The Career Center hosts multiple job and internship fairs each semester for students to network and connect with potential employers located both on and off campus.

Every fair is open to all undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Students can find jobs like student assistant, research assistant, graduate assistant, federal work study positions, on-campus internships and more!

The first fair of the semester is scheduled for Wednesday, August 30 from 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. Remind your student to keep an eye out for an email on how to register.
