Setting your Seawolf up for Success:

Learn More About the Academic Success and Tutoring Center

Greetings, Seawolf Families!

We hope your Seawolf has had a great start to the fall semester and is making new friends, getting involved, and adjusting well to their classes.

As the semester continues we want to remind our Seawolves it's never too early to seek out help if they are struggling with course material. The Academic Success and Tutoring Center (ASTC) is here to support SBU's undergraduate students with a multitude of resources. The best part? They're always FREE!

a student sits with a notebook and pencil, next to her a tutor points to text in a book

Don't just take our word for it! Let's hear from the Director of the Academic Success and Tutoring Center (ASTC), Shannon Janye:

What are some of the resources available to undergraduate students through the (ASTC)

We offer a variety of tutoring options! The first is course-based tutoring, where you work one-on-one or in small groups with a peer tutor to talk about course content and get a deeper understanding of what you're working on in the classroom. The second is skill-based tutoring where a tutor will work with you one-on-one to review general academic success strategies that you can use in any of your classes. That could include things like time management, organization, study strategies, etc.

Aside from tutoring services, what else does the center provide?

We also offer peer-assisted learning where a peer who has already successfully completed the class will sit in on the lecture again to see how things are being taught this semester. They then put together what we call collaborative learning sessions where students participate in fun activities to help them apply the difficult concepts they're learning in class.

And lastly we have success navigators. They are our peer mentors who help students with the social and academic transition to college.

Which undergraduate classes can students receive tutoring for?

We offer tutoring for a variety of subjects! We support anywhere between 65 and 85 classes every semester. Many of them are your entry level courses for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), but students will also find support for additional classes in foreign language, humanities, social sciences, and more. You can find the full list of offerings right here on our website.

How can our Seawolf Families encourage their students to check out these resources?

I think it's a matter of having open dialogue with your student and understanding that if they're struggling, it's okay, it's natural, and it's part of the learning process. It’s great to encourage them to ask for help because sometimes they are hesitant to do that. If they have another person in their life to talk about the ASTC with them, it’s very helpful.

Where can students sign up for the ASTC services?

Starting on September 5th at 9:30am, students can log onto Navigate and book an appointment with a tutor. They can also request that their appointment be a weekly session. The earlier they log onto Navigate, the more options they will have! If the Academic Success and Tutoring Center is not open when they need help, there are several late night options as well. They can attend in-person drop-in tutoring at the Residential Tutoring Centers or they can use our online drop-in tutoring service, STAR-NY. This is a partnership with other SUNY schools and is available between 7pm and midnight, Sunday through Thursday.

Welcome new and returning family members to the fall semester at Stony Brook University! The start of the academic year brings excitement for the many opportunities for student growth, learning and connections available on campus. Please remember that your encouragement will provide reassurance and confidence to your student as they jump right into their studies!

As parents, watching our children mature as university students can be an exciting and proud time for us. We see their intellectual capacity expand and are thrilled to hear them discussing material related to their areas of study. In addition to academic responsibilities, there are many opportunities for growth at Stony Brook University and we hope you will gently support your student with ideas for experiential learning, outside the classroom setting.

While family members may worry that extracurricular activities can take students away from the academic rigor that is required to be a successful student, these opportunities are high-impact activities that will develop other skills and knowledge that contribute to a well-rounded education. Research, internships, club membership and campus jobs all teach students aspects of leadership and build skills for their work ethic-skills that will certainly serve them well when they graduate!

Take a few minutes to ask your student if they plan to be involved outside the classroom with any clubs or research. Let them know that you support them in embarking on these additional educational paths and meeting new people on campus. If your student is unaware of where to begin, you can suggest they reach out to the Career Center, their academic department or the CORQ app. Remember, these connections can provide mentorship, build confidence and reinforce time management skills!

Have Questions? We Have Answers!

What is the difference between Wolfie Wallet and Dining Dollars?

Dining Dollars is a type of currency that can be used at dining halls, campus food trucks, or at any of the retail markets on campus. Think of Wolfie Wallet as a "debit card" that is built into your student's SBU ID card. It's a way for students to have extra funds without holding onto cash or a credit card. While Dining Dollars is only allowed to be used for food or beverages, Wolfie Wallet funds can be used to make purchases for food, copies, mail packages from the residential mailrooms, or purchases from select on and off campus merchants.

Click here for more info about on-campus dining.

Where does my student go if they need medical attention?

The Student Health Services offers a diverse range of medical and healthcare services. Students can also use our TimelyCare app for free 24/7 Telehealth services. To see all the Student Health Services offers click here.

How can my student order their textbook materials?

Check out the Campus Bookstore online! The bookstore offers textbook rentals, free shipping, and also price matches to other sellers like Amazon, Chegg and more!

When's the last day my student can add/drop classes?

Monday, September 11 at 4 p.m. is the last day for students to add or drop classes without a "W" (withdrawal notation on their transcript) for the fall semester. For more information, visit the Undergraduate Calendar.
