Preparing for the Spring Semester: Getting to know the Faculty Student Association (FSA)
Greetings, Seawolf Families!
We are at that point in the semester where students are itching to get through the last few weeks of class, prepare for their finals, and head back home for a much-deserved winter break!
But while they are wrapping up the semester, it's also time to prepare for the next! That includes your student meeting with their advisor and registering for classes. It's also when our new incoming students and their families begin to learn more about Stony Brook!
With that, we want to wish our Seawolf Families a happy start to the festive season, and as your student continues to work hard and finish the semester strong, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.

We know many of our Seawolf Families have had questions regarding who the Faculty Student Association (FSA) is and what exactly they do. To better explain here is a message from FSA to answer some of your questions:
The Faculty Student Association (FSA) is an auxiliary services corporation that operates many of the non-academic services on campus. Some of the many services that FSA provides include meal plan and SBU Eats dining, student health insurance, locker rentals, Microfridge rentals, vending machines, Apple and Dell education discounts, textbooks and course materials, Stony Brook and Seawolves apparel and merchandise, and on-campus jobs.
The Wolfie Wallet program is also administered by FSA and enables students to add funds to their account and then use their SBU ID card on and off campus to make purchases.
When new students arrive they are encouraged to view a dedicated webpage with everything to get started for essential services for everyday living on campus.
The FSA staff is always available to help! Their office is located on the second floor of West Side Dining, so please reach out at mealplan@stonybrook.edu or call 631.632.6517

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting
Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.
| |
We’re sure you have heard from your student that they sometimes feel overwhelmed and just can’t find the time to get everything done. We understand how busy our Stony Brook students are and we want to assist them with guidance on how to find balance with their studies, time to relax and connections with friends. The key to fitting it all in is staying organized.
If your student mentions their concerns with managing their time and responsibilities, make sure to listen and ask some questions before jumping in with advice. When your student feels heard, they also feel loved and supported. When the time is right to offer guidance on organizational skills, you may want to discuss keeping a planner, which can be either paper or digital, to keep track of their academic responsibilities; exams, papers, and dedicated study slots, along with employment hours, and time for exercise. We want to ensure our students have time for all that is necessary to be a successful student and establish an organized, healthy lifestyle.
Gently remind your student that studying and academic focus are key to their success at Stony Brook and mindfully structuring their days will also offer them the time needed for opportunities to have fun, wind down, and connect with friends. While we may see an easy path to time management with to-do lists and planners, your student is in the process of learning these skills, so sprinkling some kind, understanding tips from you will be helpful and appreciated!

Make an Appointment with a Career Coach!
As your student wraps up their semester it is always good to keep the future in mind no matter where they are in their college journey.
If your student is ever feeling unsure about if they are on the right track, encourage them to make an appointment with one of our Career Coaches!
