Family Connect - Your connection to the University

A Network of Health Ready

to Help Every Seawolf

Greetings, Seawolf Families!

Welcome to another exciting academic year! We’re thrilled to have your Seawolf back on campus, ready to dive into fresh challenges and opportunities. This year, we’re rallying both you and your student to put health front and center!

At Stony Brook, we’re all about making self-care a top priority. We’ve got a wealth of resources just waiting for you to explore, designed to help your Seawolf thrive both academically and personally.

We sat down with the Associate Vice President for Health Wellness and Prevention Services, Marisa Bisiani, to learn more about making this year, a healthy one!

There are many different areas within Student Health Wellness and Prevention Services, can you explain some of the department’s offerings?

Bisiani: There are several departments that all work together to provide integrated, comprehensive services, and although each area offers unique and distinct services, we work together to provide students with comprehensive, integrated wraparound care. This ensures that wherever a student turns, they will always receive the support they need. These departments are Student Health Services, which provides primary & urgent medical care to students, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which provides brief individual and group therapy, as well as psychiatric services, The Student Support Team, which serves as the first point of contact for students facing unexpected challenges Student Accessibility Support Center (SASC) Supports students with disabilities by providing accommodations and addressing accessibility needs. Then there’s Recreation and Wellness, which features a state-of-the-art gym, sports clubs, intramural clubs, and off-campus trips. Our Care Team addresses student behaviors that may pose a threat to health and safety, and lastly, there is our Center for Prevention and Outreach which is what I refer to as the foundation of all the work we do regarding prevention and outreach, particularly in areas such as suicide prevention, substance abuse, interpersonal violence, health education, and wellness promotion.

For many of our students this is the first time they need to keep an eye on their health instead of their Seawolf Supporter, how do we encourage our students to make health a priority?

To encourage students to make their health a priority, we emphasize the importance of self-care and provide them with the tools and resources they need to manage their well-being independently. This is often students' first time they are living independently, on their own, navigating their health challenges, and advocating for their care without assistance from their loved ones which is a unique challenge. Our teams work to create a supportive environment that normalizes conversations about mental health, and we empower students to take ownership of their unique needs. We work with students, faculty, and staff to reinforce the message that their well-being is crucial for academic and personal success.

What is a favorite resource of yours that many of our students might not know about?

It would have to be our Health Coaching! Our health coaching is available virtually 24 hours a day, and you can call and connect with a health coach to talk with them about anything.

Whether it's your sleep routine or nutrition, our TimelyCare health coaches can assist with anything you need. The best part is that this service is available 24/7, right at your fingertips.

What advice could you offer our Seawolf Supporters who are worried about the health of their students?

The best thing that we tell our Seawolf Supporters is to stay connected to their student.

Be a source of encouragement. Make sure you send a message that it's okay to seek help.

It’s important to strike a balance between giving your student independence and staying aware of any significant changes in their behavior. If something feels off, trust your instincts and reach out. You can contact any of our teams, and we’ll connect you with the right resources. We are here to support both our students and their families in any way we can.

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

Watching our students begin their fall semester brings family members a sense of pride and anticipation, and sometimes worry about how they will take care of themselves. At Stony Brook University, one of our top priorities is providing plenty of opportunities and spaces for self-care and stress management for our students. We understand that a student’s physical and emotional wellness will impact their ability to thrive with their academic responsibilities.

When you speak with your student about their transition back to their studies, ask if they are aware of just some of the places and opportunities for self-care:

  • Our Recreation and Wellness Center provides all students with access to intramural sports, fitness classes and outdoor movement facilities. It is important that students take time each day to exercise, build strength and have some fun!

  • The University recently opened our Meditation Room to provide students with a quiet space dedicated to reflection and mindfulness. Sometimes, just taking a few minutes to sit quietly and focus on their breath can help recenter and ground students during a hectic or worrisome day.
  • The Center for Prevention and Outreach provides a wide range of services and programs related to prevention and early intervention, including education related to healthy relationships and stress management. These events are instructional, but also provide time to connect with others!

When you speak with your student, be sure to ask them some open-ended questions about their involvement on campus; “What types of activities does the Rec Center offer?” or “What types of movement help alleviate stress for you?” Be sure to give them the time to figure out what is offered and what events or hobbies they are most interested in. As always, sprinkle them with love and support and let them know you are there as they discover all the University offerings that are in place to support their health and wellness!

Get to the Finish Line With U-RISE

By early September, your student is likely settling into a routine. This is the perfect time of year for your student to think about how campus resources can fit into that routine.

An often underutilized resource is professor office hours. Professor office hours are dedicated time held regularly where students can chat with their instructors or teaching assistants outside the classroom setting. Office hours allow your student to get personalized help. Going to office hours is a great first step to improve grades long before your student feels like they are struggling. This is a fantastic opportunity for your student to get valuable feedback and build strong academic relationships. Professors are eagerly awaiting your student to come in to chat with them!

Upcoming Academic Calendar Dates/Deadlines: Add/Drop/Swap Deadline

The last day your student can add, drop, or swap courses is Monday, September 9th at 4p.m (Eastern). Please encourage your student to reach out to their advisor. if they are not sure if an add/drop/swap is right for them, or if they want to learn more about withdrawing from a course after this date.

Questions to ask your student about Add/ Drop:

  • What can you talk to your professors about during office hours that will show them you take their course seriously?
  • What nerves or hesitation do you have about talking to your professors during office hours? How can you ease those nerves or hesitations?
  • Have you talked to your advisor about any classes you’re considering dropping or adding?
