Time For a Fresh Start!

Entering a New Semester Successfully

Greetings, Seawolf Families!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. Take these next few weeks to soak up as much time with your student before they head back to start another semester!

During this time we encourage you to talk with your student about what they are looking forward to when they return, and how they might be able to improve this semester. Maybe they need to reassess their limits, adjust their attitude, or even go outside their comfort zones this semester. Be sure to remind them of the resources they can use to help them be a successful student this spring.

Tips from Students

As we start a new year and a new semester let's look back at our best advice from students in 2023!

Sprinkling Support: Salt Shaker Parenting

Our metaphor of being a Salt Shaker parent means sprinkling your child with support, questions, and love in a gentle, subtle way.

Salt shaker

It is hard to believe that we are at the halfway mark of the academic year! As your student prepares to begin the spring semester, take some time to ask how they think fall went for them and if they gained any wisdom along the way on how to meet their academic and personal goals better. Students sometimes feel disappointed with their grades and may think they are not bright enough to find success as a Stony Brook student, but what they may need is an adjustment in their mindset and study skills.

Individuals who believe their talents and scholarly pursuits can be developed through perseverance, dedication, and effective time management have a growth mindset. Students should continually evaluate their habits related to their academic goals and utilize new and creative strategies to find increased success. If your student struggles to meet deadlines or do well on exams, you may want to remind them of the skills-based tutoring at the Academic Success and Tutoring Center.

If your student seems disheartened with their academic progress, sprinkle them with encouragement and support and gently suggest they reach out to their advisor or the Academic Success and Tutoring Center to discuss options for how to reframe their mindset and habits.  As family members, it is important for us to gently remind our students that their education is a journey and that their ability to be proactive in modifying their approach and gaining wisdom each semester will serve them well as students and beyond!
