Wine Of The Week

Hello Klaus,

Ried

The word "Ried" on an Austrian wine label indicates that the wine comes from a single vineyard. The concept of “origin” can be quite complex when understanding Austria’s wines. Origin is not only a definition of the specific winegrowing region; it may also define the specific place that the wines come from and the quality – whether this be a municipality, a Großlage (large collective vineyard site) or a Ried (single vineyard).

Ried Loisium is located directly beside the attraction of the same name, LOISIUM World of Wine. The vineyards are located at an elevation of roughly 220 to 260 metres and face predominantly south and south-east. The soil is a black earth composed of loess, which provides a deep root depth. The loess along the southern edge of the Ried is colluvial, i.e. has been altered by run-off. Loess is a calcareous rock dust (silt) that has sometimes been carried down a slope, argillified and decalcified. The Administrativkarte Niederösterreich (administrative map of Lower Austria) shows vineyards at this location, the plot was named “Gerstfeld” at the time.

KAMPTAL

GRÜNER VELTLINER & RIESLING, MILLIONS OF YEARS YOUNG

Named for the river Kamp that runs through it, its leading municipality is Langenlois, Austria’s largest wine town – and with 3,582 hectares under vines and numerous internationally known top estates, the Kamptal is one of the most successful wine-growing regions in the country. Culture and tourism also enjoy particular prominence here in the region. Since 2008, the name Kamptal DAC stands for Grüner Veltliner or Riesling, either in the classic-to-middleweight styles, or as a robust dry Reserve-category wine.

  Loisium Wine Spa Hotel

It's an innovative concept: a hotel and spa for wine lovers with an outstanding architectural approach. Set amid rolling vineyards in Austria's most popular white-wine region, Loisium Wine & Spa Resort Langenlois appears to float on pillars and glass. The 82 plus 30 new guest rooms feature the wine theme and a map of an underground labyrinth of 900-year-old wine cellars, a motif used throughout the hotel. Airy rooms have large windows overlooking vineyards and the wonderfully rural lifestyle of the surrounding villages. The hotel features a lovely year-round heated outdoor swimming pool, spa treatments, a spectacular wine-savvy restaurant, and offers trips to the educational wine center next door for tastings or seminars. Guests won't want to miss one of the trekking tours through the lovely surrounding vineyards, or a visit to the Danube valley with its monasteries and old castle.
