"Taming the Tongue: The Wisdom of Words"
Have you ever said something in the heat of the moment and wished you could take it back? Words, once spoken, take on a life of their own. They can heal, or they can wound. This truth is at the heart of James 3:1-12, where we’re reminded of the power our words carry and the wisdom it takes to use them well.
James tells us that the tongue, though small, is like a rudder on a ship—it has the ability to steer the course of our lives and relationships. And as we all know, it doesn’t take much for our words to spark a fire. A careless comment, a sharp retort, or a bit of gossip can spread quickly, causing division, pain, and misunderstanding. In a world where words are constantly shared—whether in person or online—it’s easy to forget their weight. But as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard.
What if we saw our words as opportunities for wisdom? Instead of reacting, we could pause. Instead of lashing out, we could listen. Instead of criticizing, we could encourage. Just as James reminds us that a tree is known by its fruit, our speech reveals the wisdom—or lack thereof—that dwells in our hearts.
I know life is full of trials. We’re often juggling stress, facing challenges, and experiencing frustration, but it’s in these very moments that our wisdom is shaped. Every trial is an opportunity to grow, and every conversation is a chance to reflect God’s love. The truth is, taming our tongue isn’t about staying silent—it’s about speaking life. It’s about using our words to bless and not to curse, to lift up rather than tear down.
This week, I challenge you to be mindful of the words you speak. Ask God for the wisdom to guide your tongue and to fill your heart with the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It may not be easy, but remember: the journey toward wisdom begins with a single step. And with God’s help, each of us can grow into a wellspring of encouragement and truth.
Let us be a community known for the way we use our words to heal, to bless, and to bring peace. Together, we can build a church and a world where our words are tools of unity, understanding, and grace.

Stay Connected through Bible Study
As the season of Summer begins to wrap up and our dear friends start to head home, let's make sure we Stay Connected through Bible Study!
Have you ever wondered about the differences between the gospels or felt curious about diving deeper into the scriptures? Now is the perfect opportunity to explore these questions in a welcoming and supportive community.
We are thrilled to invite you to join our upcoming Bible study, led by Tracy Rubin, a Harvard Divinity School graduate from the Class of 2012. Tracy has been leading Bible studies for over a decade at her parish in Needham, MA, and this summer, she guided our lectionary study at St. Mary’s. Her wealth of experience and passion for scripture promises an enriching and insightful journey through the Bible.
Starting on Wednesday, September 18th, we will begin our study of the Gospel of Luke—a beautifully written narrative that offers a unique perspective on Jesus. Luke’s gospel is particularly inclusive, speaking to people of all backgrounds, regardless of social standing, gender, or religious affiliation. Many of the stories we cherish about Jesus can only be found in this gospel, making it an essential book for those eager to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith.
Whether you're joining us in person or from the comfort of your home via Zoom, you’ll be part of a nationwide community of learners, all journeying together through this powerful text. Classes are discussion-based, allowing everyone to share their insights and learn from one another.
We offer two convenient times to fit your schedule:
10-11:30 AM or 7-8:30 PM.

This Bible study is more than just a class; it’s an opportunity to build deeper relationships with God and with each other. As we explore the Gospel of Luke together, we’ll strengthen our faith, grow in our understanding, and stay connected as a community, no matter where we are.

A Prayer for our Bible Study
Loving and Gracious God,
We come before You with hearts open and eager to grow in our understanding of Your word. As we embark on this journey through the Gospel of Luke, we ask for Your Holy Spirit to guide us, enlighten us, and draw us closer to You and to one another.
May this study be a time of deep reflection, where we encounter the teachings of Jesus in new and transformative ways. Open our minds to the wisdom of the scriptures, and may the stories we read resonate within us, inspiring us to live out Your love and compassion in our daily lives.
Bless Tracy, our teacher, with clarity, wisdom, and patience as she leads us through this study. May her words and insights encourage us to ask questions, share our thoughts, and grow together in faith.
We pray for each person who joins this class, whether in person or from afar, that they may find in this community a place of belonging and support. Help us to strengthen the bonds of fellowship, knowing that even as we are scattered across different places, we are united in You.
Lord, may this time spent in Your word deepen our relationship with You, shape our hearts in the likeness of Christ, and fill us with a renewed sense of purpose and peace. As we study, let our hearts be open to Your voice, guiding us in all truth and love.

As stewards, we are called to use these gifts wisely, generously, and joyfully to further God's work in the world.
Why is Stewardship Important?
Deepening Our Faith: Stewardship is a spiritual practice that helps us grow in faith. By giving back a portion of what we have received, we acknowledge God's sovereignty and express our gratitude for His blessings. How You Can Get Involved

Why Serve?
Spiritual Enrichment: As an Acolyte or Eucharistic Minister, you'll play a vital role in our worship services, helping to create a sacred and reverent atmosphere. This ministry offers a profound way to experience God's presence and grace.
Community Connection: Serving in these roles strengthens your bond with fellow parishioners and enhances your sense of belonging within our church family.
Personal Growth: Engaging in this ministry allows you to grow in faith, humility, and service. It's an opportunity to develop leadership skills and deepen your understanding of our liturgical traditions.
What Does the Role Involve?
Acolytes assist in the preparation and conduct of our worship services, lighting candles, carrying the cross, and helping with the altar.
Eucharistic Ministers assist in distributing the Holy Communion, sharing the body and blood of Christ with our congregation.
No prior experience is needed—just a heart willing to serve and a commitment to our church’s mission. Training will be provided to ensure you feel confident and supported in your new role.

Coffee Hour is held after service every Sunday in the parish hall. It is an opportunity to get together for relaxed conversation and fellowship over a cup of coffee. If you would like to provide a snack for coffee hour, please pick a Sunday and sign up. Nothing elaborate, just a small snack to enjoy with coffee.
