President's Message

SNRS Encourages You to Stay an Active Member!

Welcome Autumn! For many of our members, this is a time to begin a new year of teaching, research, practice, education, and service to our populations of need. We want all nurses to be actively involved in Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS), including those who conduct original research, translational research, educational research, and those engaged in leadership in these endeavors. We especially welcome students from undergraduate to postgraduate education to become active members of SNRS because they are our future. For your Board of Directors, this is a busy time of year planning our 2024 annual conference, and all committees are actively participating in making this our best conference yet. A special Thank You needs to go to the Conference Planning Committee, led by our Vice-President, Dean Hychol Brian An, and committee chair Dr. Suzanne Prevost. This committee always works very hard to plan exceptional conferences for SNRS and we need to express our gratitude to them for the hard work they do all year long for an outstanding conference.

SNRS is a strong, vibrant organization that is continually growing to meet our members’ needs. Our 2024 annual conference in Charlotte, N.C. is our 38th conference and its theme is Collaborating to Advance Nursing Research, Education, Leadership, and Practice. It will be our first conference in Charlotte, North Carolina hosted at the Le Meridien-Sheraton from February 21-23. We anticipate a strong attendance from all the North Carolina schools and colleges of nursing and health care institutions. Our 38th conference promises to be larger than our previous two and is approaching the number of presentations of our 2017 conference, our largest to date. We have many opportunities for sponsorship of our conference, and we encourage all colleges/schools of nursing, healthcare organizations, and nursing organizations to actively sponsor our conference because that is one of the best ways to reach talented nurses!

Our conference is the time to share your research and meet new and returning members and host committee meetings. Be sure to submit abstracts for presentation. More information about abstract submission can be found on our SNRS website at https://snrs.org/events/2024-annual-conference/. We have nearly doubled the abstracts submitted over the previous year, and we have not yet reached the deadline! If you have not submitted an abstract yet, you can still submit during the second round of submissions. The second round of submissions is open from August 1 to October 1 and includes student posters. The Top Student Posters will be selected from this round so if you’re a student, be sure to submit your abstracts! To provide rigorous reviews of the abstracts, more than 70 members have become abstract reviewers! This is a wonderful response from our membership because last year we had less than 30 reviewers. Thank you to all our reviewers for answering the call!

We have outstanding Keynote speakers who have agreed to share their knowledge with us. They are Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, Dean of the Duke University School of Nursing, and Dr. Deborah Jones, Senior Vice President and Dean of the University of Texas Medical Branch, School of Nursing. We are thrilled to have three outstanding nursing leaders, researchers, and influential trailblazers as our keynote speakers at the 2024 conference!

Lastly, our finances are in strong shape, and we are recovering from the decrease in our revenue and membership that occurred during the pandemic. We gained financial ground because of our successful conference in Orlando, FL in 2023. Our members’ dues are essential, so I encourage everyone to make sure that your membership is up to date! Please keep your dues current and encourage your fellow nurses to join and then continue with their membership in SNRS.

I hope to see all members in February 2024 in Charlotte, N.C.!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Reifsnider, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, PHCNS-BC, FAANP, FAAN

President, Southern Nursing Research Society
