SMISHING:

On The Rise

Smishing and other mobile threats are on the rise, so it's important to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of unusual text messages.

What is Smishing (SMS Phishing)? Smishing is a type of phishing that uses fake text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or losing money.

Look out for:

  • Enticing offers
  • Unusual requests for information
  • Alerts that make you panic
  • Unusual links

Recent smishing attacks in the news include the TRUIST and SunPass Toll smishing scams.

According to a new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data analysis, the past year’s No. 1 text message scam involves fraudsters posing as a bank. The median loss for such bank texting scams was $3,000.

Scammers sent 'urgent' text messages to SunPass users, stating that there is a $3.95 toll charge on the Florida Turnpike. The message instructs recipients to pay immediately to avoid fees and provides a fraudulent website link to submit payment.

PHISHING Emails:

Do Not Forward

It’s imperative that phishing emails don't get forwarded to prevent further spread of scams to protect yourself and others.

To report a phishing email you have opened in Gmail, click the three-dot icon beside the reply button and select 'Report phishing'.

When you report a phishing email in Gmail, the email is sent to Google’s security team. They investigate the email and take steps to protect Gmail users, such as removing malicious emails, blocking suspicious websites, and alerting other users.
