Message from Pastor Jackie

Some hold the Epiphany tradition of choosing a “star word” which becomes their focal point for the year. During coffee with a dear friend with whom I shared both my joys and struggles, she suggested the word—embrace for me. Hmm, "embrace", is an interesting word. I can’t quite grasp what it all means and that is the point of a “star word”. It is meant to be a journey of learning and growing with God guided by that "star".

What does it mean to embrace life as it is, not as we wish it would be? How do we embrace a difficulty and make the best out of it? How can I open my eyes and heart to the beauty of the people and circumstances that God has placed before me? As I reflect on these questions and the word this week, my heart is filled with gratitude and joy for you dear people of Christ the King.

With the open position of the Faith Formation coordinator, the leadership of those on the education team continues the educational programs of the congregation. With a variety of parents teaching Sunday School, the children enjoy the lesson in creative ways. I loved the art project with the big listening ears! Due to the different personalities and gifts of parents and mentors assisting with Confirmation, we have learned in different ways, including reading skits and singing old songs like: “Dem Bones.” The group who began the staff-led “At Heart” Bible study continued by rotating the leadership. They plan on moving forward by selecting another book study.

At the annual meeting, VP Jeff Wittrock presented the exciting ministry at CTK and Treasurer, Barb Hamann presented the good news about CTK’s current financial position. Thank you all, for your passion for ministry and generosity! CTK elected Jeff Wittrock as the President and Jim Haas as Vice President. Thank you, for stepping up to these leadership roles. I am grateful for and so blessed to work with the leadership of Jeff, Jim, Barb and the rest of the council.

As CTK follows God into 2024, we embrace the ministry initiates or goals to follow. I commend these to each of you and to our committees for implementation. What does it look like for us to embrace these and move forward with faith?

In Christ’s Service,

Pr. Jackie

Greater Milwaukee Synod News

Equipping the Saints Greater Milwaukee Synod Mission Appeal.

When I was CTK’s intern, over a decade ago, Pr. Gary Grindeland would say: “We are stronger when we are together.” I recall how he connected CTK to the community, when I think about the Equipping the Saints GMS Synod Mission Appeal which has been in existence since 2022. The Synod has given churches the grace of time to implement in their own way.

The purpose of the funding appeal is to come together to find new ways to follow Jesus, form communities and invite all. Money is being raised and has already been spent in two main areas: innovation and collaboration, and leadership.

In the next couple weeks, CTK will show some videos and share the story of how this appeal equips the saints for the work of ministry and builds up the body of Christ.  The theme for the service is Wednesday March 20th— “You shall love the Lord your God with all your strength.” During the message time, we will watch the video to learn how we can be stronger together by contributing to this appeal. There will be a special collection taken for the appeal on March 20th.

Can Faith Manage Stress?

Various spiritual practices can assist in managing stress. Here are just a few ideas of things that can help. Regardless of your religious tradition, you are probably already doing these things!

Breathing Techniques involve taking deep breaths, focusing on breathing, and counting breaths to create a rhythm that regulates the body.

Prayer is a widely practiced method of addressing your thoughts and concerns to God or a higher power. You can use your own words or read prayers written by others.

Scripture is taken from the Bible and has been considered an anchor and blueprint for many individuals. It includes verses about hope and strength.

Gratitude can help release dopamine (the hormone that helps you feel content and motivated) which helps us feel good and builds our inner strength to manage stress.

Social Connection is also essential; having a solid support network can help you improve your ability to navigate stress.
