Status Update: Conditional Use Permit for Coffin Butte Landfill

Benton County would like to provide clarification about the current Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application status. The County is currently reviewing Republic Services' application for a Conditional Use Permit to expand the Coffin Butte Landfill. The County has until Friday, August 16, 2024 to determine if the application is complete and notify the applicant in writing. An outside land use planning consultant, Winterbrook Planning, is conducting the review of the application.

On a related issue to the Coffin Butte Landfill, the Board and County leadership are aware and will be monitoring the progress of U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, along with Representative Val Hoyle, who have recently called on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to investigate environmental concerns at Coffin Butte Landfill.

The County will work diligently to release information on the findings by next Friday.
