MDVA Secretary Woods Visits The Baltimore Station

We were honored to welcome the Maryland Department of Veteran Affairs (MDVA) Secretary Anthony Woods to The Baltimore Station last month! As one of the largest residential treatment programs supported by the VA, we are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our organization and the crucial work we do supporting the veteran community.

Secretary Woods was given a full tour of The Baltimore Station by Executive Director John Friedel and Deputy Director Kim Callari, meeting representatives from all departments -- case managers, kitchen team, volunteers, and others. After learning about our mission, future goals, and unique program aspects, Secretary Woods spoke with clients about his story and goals for supporting veterans now that he has taken office.

We hope that our efforts, along with other community partners, bring us one step closer to a day when every veteran has a safe and stable place to call home. A huge thank you to Secretary Woods for making time to visit The Baltimore Station and learning about the work we are doing to Turn Lives Around.

New Program Announcement!

We have expanded our program offerings to now include a 3.3 program. What is 3.3? A 3.3 program provides residential, medium intensity, clinically managed substance abuse treatment in a structured environment. This program allows us to continue to help veterans as well as other individuals who need support for chronic alcohol or other substance abuse issues.

Just like you would not fix a broken arm with a band aid, it often takes more than just a quick fix to aid in issues with addiction. This program allows us to continue our work in a more structured format that expands our outreach to those who need it most. In addition to opening up the client base we can accept, this will also give us greater time to work with veterans in need of more intense programing and later integrate them into our veteran-based work at South Baltimore Station.

What does this change for those supporting The Baltimore Station? Not a thing! We are still in need of support from our generous community of donors and volunteers. We will continue to grow our program in a way that meets the changing needs of the men that we serve but always comes back to our mission of turning lives around.

Free Flow Day for Clients

Have you ever felt burnt out or overwhelmed by everything life has thrown at you? Ever needed a break from the same routine to bring some excitement and fun back to your everyday life? No matter your circumstance, everyone deserves the opportunity to relax and have a day of fun, and that is exactly what we did at The Baltimore Station. Staff members, lead by resident attendant Aaron Evans, worked together on a planning committee to take ideas and input from clients to plan the first ever Baltimore Station Free Flow Day!

We kicked off the fun with a lunch, bringing clients and staff together from both of our facilities to sit around the table and enjoy each other’s company. We do not often have an opportunity to simply relax and remember good times, but it was a great way to give everyone the space to be themselves and be present with one another. We then spent the next couple of hours playing card games, competing in chess, and playing a softball game. A special thank you to Loyola Blakefield for bringing students to join the fun and run the field bases with us.

Laughs were heard, prizes were won, and a special giveaway basket was even passed out. Clients and staff had a great time welcoming the summer and letting go of stress, learning that even a regular Tuesday afternoon can bring enough good times and fun memories to last a lifetime.

Welcome New Board Members

We are excited to announce that we recently added two new members to our board of directors, bringing the total to 20 dedicated members who help The Baltimore Station further its mission. The newly elected members include Chris Barnes (above left), Senior Manager of Fleet Services at Baltimore Gas and Electric. Barnes has more than 22 years of military service as a Lieutenant Commander and five years in the corporate sector. Our second new board member is Tyler Mays (above right), Client Executive/Associate General Counsel at RCM&D. In addition to more than a decade of experience as an insurance defense litigator, Mays has a deep connection to The Baltimore Station and remembers volunteering here as a teenager.

Additionally, Danielle Gofstein was named president of the board after serving as vice president for the past two years. Natalie Arteen from M&T Bank was named vice president. Welcome to the team everyone!
